Express News Service KOCHI: Azhimala in Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram, picturesque with the tranquil yet erratic sea, mellow fisherfolk, a handful of tourists and the revered Shiva Temple, is now host to a congregation of tourists. In majestic glory, a 58-ft-tall statue of Lord Shiva as Gangadhareswara, with his windswept, tumultuous dreadlocks enclosing a triumphant Goddess Ganga, has been intricately sculpted on the premises of the Azhimala temple, adjacent to the sea. Unveiled recently, the country’s tallest statue of Lord Shiva has gone viral — both on land and on social media. Sculpted by 29-year-old P S Devadathan over six long years, the concrete statue, mounted on a rock at an altitude of 20 ft from the sea, invokes a magnificent grandeur and a sense of sacredness. The Azhimala native was handed over the mission by the temple priest. “I’ve been close to him for as far as I can recall. We’ve shared a similar sense of intellectualism which eventually led him to share such a concept and trust me with the same. Owing to my age, the public had their apprehensions. But I believed in my abilities,” says the College of Fine Arts (Thiruvananthapuram) graduate. The duo wasted no time. The massive structure depicts Shiva's hair flowing in the wind and holding Goddess Ganga. Unlike most statues with a face-frontal view, here Shiva gazes angularly at the sky, nerves and muscles delicately carved. The architecture of the temple is similar to the temples in neighboring Tamil Nadu. The temple has a square sanctum sanctorum. There is a chuttambalam, small gopuram and kodimaram or dhwaja stambha. The upa devatas worshipped in the temple are Ganapathi and Sastha. Shivratri is the most important festival in the temple. Fortnightly pradosham and Mondays are significance in the temple.

The sculpture should resist the water and salt content. So, we have mixed some chemicals with cement to resist saltwater. I did complete research after finishing the drawing and 3D images. It has built-in rock, so we have checked the density of rock, wind load and calculated the weight," he said. "This place is beautiful and influenced me. I thought about how to make it more beautiful.
