Dera chief Ram Rahim’s wife, mother return to Rajasthan home

It was a quiet home-coming for the two women. A photo from Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s family album.(HT Photo) Their house would have been teeming with fawning visitors but a lot has changed since August 25 for Naseeb Kaur and Harjit Kaur. They came to Gurusar Mundia in Rajasthan’s Sriganganagar district late on Monday, a few hours after a court in neighbouring Haryana ordered Dera Sacha Sauda chief Naseeb Kaur is the mother and Harjit the wife of the 50-year-old self-styled godman, whose followers ran riot on August 25 after he was found guilty of rape. The two women, who have shunned the limelight unlike the flamboyant sect leader who loved the spotlight, have locked themselves in. Visitors are not allowed. Little is known about the women. It was Singh’s “adopted daughter” He has two daughters and a son with Harjit. People rushed to the house to catch a glimpse of them but returned disappointed -- the gate was locked, sources said. The two came to village in a cavalcade of six vehicles, Sriganganagar district collector Gyana Ram said. Dera supporters who came to drop them left soon after. The women, according to the villagers, used to live in Haryana’s Sirsa, the headquarters of the dera that has a considerable following in Punjab, Haryana and parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. A lot of dera followers left Sirsa ahead of the verdict as security forces patrolled the town but many were holed up in the sprawling campus. Concerned that the presence of...

Is ‘Ashram’ and its sequel based on the life and crimes of the notorious godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh?

Disgraced spiritual guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been behind bars for more than 2 years. He was found guilty of raping two of his women followers by a special CBI court and was sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison, 10 years for each of the two rape convictions. In January 2019, Ram Rahim received another big blow when him and three others were convicted of murdering journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati in 2002 and were given a life sentence. Chattrapati had attracted Ram Rahim’s ire after publishing an anonymous letter accusing the Dera Sacha Sauda leader of rape. The list of Ram Rahim’s crimes is so long that it can put Bollywood villains to shame. But he was a master-manipulator who managed to hide his true self so well that millions of people believed him to be their hero, their savior and their spiritual guide. The attention and adulation that he received from his followers was like a drug for Ram Rahim and he couldn’t get enough of it. His narcissism is quite visible in the string of ridiculous propaganda films that he wrote, directed, edited and acted in between 2015 and 2017. He is also credited as the cinematographer and lyricist, among many other things, for these films. The films, which were supposedly inspired by Ram Rahim’s own life, showed him as a messiah, a crusader against crime, a righteous man who possesses superhuman physical strength as well as intelligence. But the reel-life Ram Rahim was nothing like the real-life Ram Rahim, who was a lecherou...

Clueless in Babaland: Ram Rahim to 'Freezer Baba', how 'godmen' cast a spell over Punjab & Haryana

Ram Rahim Singh — the controversial chief of  Dera Sacha Sauda convicted in rape and murder cases and serving a life sentence — is back making headlines. He is out on parole yet again, this time for 40 days, and is organising virtual  satsangs  that have drawn local BJP leaders in Haryana and sparked a furore. Like in the past, his parole comes in the run-up to an assembly bypoll and panchayat elections in Haryana. The political belief is Ram Rahim is popular among the Dalits of Punjab and Haryana and can help swing some votes. Ram Rahim, however, is one of many such gurus or babas or ‘godmen’ in Punjab and Haryana, and quite a few of them are known to be shady. This August 2017 National Interest, written in the days after Ram Rahim’s conviction, captures the phenomenon of north India’s ‘godmen’ and probes why the people of Punjab and Haryana are particularly vulnerable to babas. If the context hadn’t been so stark we would have found this question more perplexing: which part of our country has the most ‘godmen’ per square mile? It is, indeed, an unusual suspect, Punjab and Haryana. This region is known for much else in our country but not really for such a preponderance of religion, spirituality and self-styled ‘godmen’. Not all are crooks. Some have evolved their own spiritual philosophies, stayed within the law and also done philanthropy and public service. Most of the rest are essentially land-grabbing political fixers, power-brokers and shady entr...

Honeypreet & Ram Rahim Had an Illicit Relationship: Ex

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's "adopted daughter" Honeypreet's ex-husband Vishwas Gupta on Friday accused them of having illicit relations and said their father-daughter relationship was a sham to fool followers and others. "Which father makes his daughter sleep on his bed? She always used to be with him," said Mr Gupta, since divorced from Honeypreet. "She never slept with me. Every night, she was with him (Ram Rahim). The sect chief virtually made me a captive and did not allow my (then) wife Honeypreet to come to me," Mr Gupta told the media in Chandigarh. Mr Gupta, whose family was a staunch dera follower, was married to Honeypreet in 2009 at the behest of Ram Rahim. Honeypreet's real name is Priyanka Taneja and she hails from Fatehabad town in Haryana. Mr Gupta moved the court for divorce in 2011. He claimed that he saw Ram Rahim and Honeypreet in a compromising situation in the Dera chief's 'gufa' or private accommodation on the sprawling campus near Sirsa town in Haryana. "After the threat, I left for my home. Two guards (of Ram Rahim) were given orders to eliminate me. We left the Dera in July 2011 and shifted to Panchkula. My father had sold all our properties and invested in the Dera campus. In Panchkula, I was trailed by Dera followers," claimed Mr Gupta, whose grandfather was a legislator from Gharaunda in Haryana and father a government engineer. Mr Gupta claimed the Dera chief forced him and his family to publicly seek forgiveness from him. ...

Once caught Gurmeet Ram Rahim in bed with my wife, says husband of Dera chief's adopted daughter Honeypreet Insan

Rohtak: In what may come as a shock for many, the husband of Gurmeet Ram Rahim's adopted daughter Honeypreet Insan once claimed that the Dera chief was physically involved with his wife. Vishwas Gupta, who married Honeypreet, originally named Priyanka Taneja, in 1999, in the presence of Gurmeet Ram Rahim, accused the Baba of having illicit relationships with his wife. In his divorce petition, that he filed in 2011, Gupta claimed that he once caught Gurmeet in bed with his wife. "I was staying at the goofa (cave), private room of Baba ji. My wife was with him. He had inadvertently left the door open. They were naked and were having sex. They were shocked when they saw me. Baba had threatened me not to reveal anything and had said that I will be killed,' Gupta, who was previously a Dera follower, told Mail Today. In another claim, he alleged that he and his wife Honeypreet issued to accompany Ram Rahim wherever the self-styled godman would go, however, Baba would never let his wife sleep with Gupta. "She and Baba would sleep in one room," he claimed. His allegations were rejected by the leaders of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect as they termed it concocted and baseless. Later, Gupta retracted his charges against his wife and Baba and settled down the matter outside the court. "Honeypreet was adopted by Baba as he had bad intentions. He sexually exploited her as she was beautiful," Gupta had claimed, who now lives in secrecy, allegedly following threats from members of the sect. On...
