All international flight operations at KIA to be shifted to Terminal

All international flight operations at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) will be shifted to Terminal-2 (T-2) from September 1. Currently, all international flight operations are confined to the 15-year-old Terminal-1 (T-1). The 2,55,661-sq. m T-2, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 11, 2022, became operational on January 15. At present, T-2 is operating only domestic services. Three domestic carriers, Star Air, AirAsia India, and Vistara are operating from the new terminal. A BIAL spokesperson said that starting from September 1, T-2 would be exclusively used for international flight operations. With the shifting of all international flight operations to T-2, the old terminal or T-1 will cater to only domestic operations. “To minimise the impact on passengers, the refurbishment will begin after relocating all international traffic to T-2. By transferring international operations to T-2, the airport creates a window of opportunity with reduced demand on T-1 (existing international area),” a spokesperson said. A total of 31.91 million passengers travelled through the KIA during 2022-23. Of this, 28.12 million were domestic passengers and 3.78 million international passengers. The airport is connected to 25 international destinations. Hari Marar, MD and CEO of Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), which operates KIA, told Moneycontrol, "International operations will be completely relocated to T2, while Terminal 1 (T1) will exclusively serve as a domestic terminal. September 1 is the firm date for the collective transition of all international airlines from T1 to T2. The transition will not be carried out in phases, as immigration counters and customs office need to be set up. At midnight on August 31, all international traffic will be shifted to T2. Terminal 2 is designed as a tribute to the garden city of Bengaluru and the passenger experience is meant to be a “walk in the garden.” Passengers will travel through 10,000+ sq metres of green walls, hanging gardens and outdoor gardens and all of these were made in India using indigenous technology. BENGALURU: From September 1, 2023, all international flight operations in Bengaluru will commence from the newly unveiled Terminal 2 of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) as Terminal 1 will switch to an all-exclusive domestic operator. Sources with the KIA said the works are swiftly under way towards the September 1 deadline to start all international operations from the T2 dubbed the Terminal in a Garden for its green outlook. While the shift is expected to take place gradually, August 31 will be the final day for international flights to take off from Terminal 1. Offices of the Indian Customs and other agencies as part of the international operations is getting ready at T2 apart from an advanced baggage drop and screening system for a large number of international travellers. Work is also processing into setting up other facilities including duty-free outlets, diners and lounges at the new terminal. The 2,55,645 sq m Phase 1 of the T2 that was unveiled on November 11, 2022, began flight operations on January 15, 2023, with domestic carrier Star Air being the first. At present Vistara and Air Asia also operate domestic flights from T2 where more domestic carriers are expected to open operations.
