Besant Nagar Beach (Chennai (Madras))

The Elliott's beach or popularly known as Besant Nagar beach is a pretty clean beach to visit. Evenings are quite good with a gentle breeze blowing and no sun (unlike Goa, etc.) as Chennai faces the east. Pakodas and spring potato and chat items are available in plenty and are ok. Water is a bit deep so do not venture inside the sea. Besant Nagar Beach is a very happening place, especially for those who are young and young at heart. On our recent visit to this Beach, we came across this roadside stall called Mr.Potato. They use a special machine which skewers the long potatoes and then runs the potato through a slicing machine which can either be motor-operated or hand-operated. What comes out is a potato which has been sliced into one unbroken length much like a spring. The skewer is then put into boiling oil and cheese, masala etc etc is added. The end result is pure heaven, but please leave your calorie-counter at home when eating this. There aren't many places in Chennai for sight seeing but this place surely needs a look see. If you like a calm, serene place with surf & sand, its got to be Bessy as she's locally called by the new generation. The crowd has grown over the years, but the trend has been educated & decent.Lots of food spots & some carry the brand name & value.Weekends are a full house & parking is quite difficult, hence stop in the by lanes around & take a walk. You have a few surrounding places like, Vellankani church, Ashtalakshmi temple. I personally lov...

Babu said over 200 visitors gathered to sign the petition in one hour and supported the protest. “We don’t object to the construction of toilets but the location,” said Dr. Babu. “A few years ago, under Swadesh Darshan, funded by the Ministry of Tourism, the civic body had spent ₹9 crore. The civic body developed a promenade and a sea view point with umbrellas, seating arrangements and a garden. Now just in front of this, on the sand, a huge toilet is being constructed, blocking the beach view. We insist that the toilets be provided at the corners and even on the other side where the CMWSSB pumping station is located,” said Dr. Babu. The protesters said 40% of the sand area had been encroached upon by eateries and 20% by amusement parks. “We cannot afford to lose any more sandy space in the name of amenities on the beach.
