Patnaik’s legacy extends far beyond the realm of politics and governance(HT Archives) There has been a steady stream of demands over the years to confer India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, on him. His 104th birth anniversary today provides the perfect occasion to reiterate this demand to honour the former chief minister of Odisha. It was Patnaik as chief minister who recognised the value of Odisha’s 400-km coastline and maritime traditions by establishing, against all odds, the Paradip deep sea port. Such was the enigma of Biju Patnaik, fondly called Biju Babu. But the introduction still falls short for the ‘Tall Man’ of Odisha. There were more aspects to his personality that very few people knew. Biju Babu was a skillful singer, a sports enthusiast and a daredevil leader. The Singer In an interview from the archives of Odisha’s history, celebrated Odissi music Guru and composer late Pandit Raghunath Panigrahi had applauded Biju Babu’s singing skills. Panigrahi had said that he once drove Biju Babu to Cuttack’s Choudwar in his car and there the latter sang a song.
