On his birth anniversary here are some facts about the legendary political leader. • Biju Patnaik’s full name was Bijayananda Patnaik. • He was born to Ashalata Devi, a Bengali mother, and father Lakshiminarayan, who was Odia, on March 5, 1916 in Cuttack. His ancestors were from G.Nuagan, Bellaguntha of Ganjam District. • Biju Patnaik was a trained pilot as he was interested in aviation, so he was dropped out from Ravenshaw College. • He was honoured by the British rulers for his bravery of releasing some British families during Second World War who were imprisoned by Japanese. • UNESCO Kalinga Prize was founded by Biju Pattnaik in 1951 for the popularization of Science. His 104th birth anniversary today provides the perfect occasion to reiterate this demand to honour the former chief minister of Odisha. It was Patnaik as chief minister who recognised the value of Odisha’s 400-km coastline and maritime traditions by establishing, against all odds, the Paradip deep sea port. The Singer In an interview from the archives of Odisha’s history, celebrated Odissi music Guru and composer late Pandit Raghunath Panigrahi had applauded Biju Babu’s singing skills. Panigrahi had said that he once drove Biju Babu to Cuttack’s Choudwar in his car and there the latter sang a song. Panigrahi was amazed by his beautiful singing and compared his voice with those of legends KL Saigal and Pankaj Kumar Mullick. The Sportsperson Biju Babu was also a sports enthusiast.
