Bharatiya Janata Party: Bjp, Sena Carry On Sparring Over Thane, Kalyan Ls Seats

THANE: The dispute between the ruling The statement, which could widen the local differences between the allies, was made at a BJP conclave with senior BJP leaders and cabinet ministers in attendance in CM Eknath Shinde’s city of Thane. Taking a dig at Shinde and his son, Lok Sabha MP from Kalyan Shrikant Shinde, Kelkar said, “Many from our district, including our allies, have won since 2014 because of the BJP wave. There is no one other than the BJP who can get elected here due to our immense groundwork. Not just Thane and Kalyan, but the entire district and neighbouring Palghar have belonged to us (BJP) since the era of Rambhau Mhalgi and Ram Kapse. I am surprised when people (Sena) start claiming their authority over seats in Thane. They seem to be nursing a misconception that they are the ones working to re-elect PM Meanwhile, even as senior BJP leaders who were present at the event did not clarify or downplay the statement later, political observers said it could be interpreted as the party’s tacit support to the approach of reclaiming Thane from the ally. The Sena, on the other hand, was quick to hit back, claiming they didn’t pay heed to what Kelkar said. “What is more important is that senior party leaders like CM Eknath Shinde and deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis are together, and the alliance has also been also cemented by BJP state president Chandrakant Bawankule. Rather than discouraging a youngster, we must look at the good constructive work he is doing in the cons...

Maharashtra Council polls: Spotlight on Independents and small parties amid BJP vs MVA

By PTI MUMBAI: After being outwitted by the opposition BJP in the recent Rajya Sabha elections in Maharashtra, the ruling Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is now facing another challenge of getting all its six candidates elected to the state Legislative Council in the June 20 polls, which has once again put the spotlight on Independents and smaller parties. While the tenure of nine sitting members of the legislative council is coming to an end on July 7, the election for the 10th seat was necessitated following the death of a BJP legislator earlier this year. A total of 11 candidates are in the fray for the 10 seats up for grabs, with the MVA allies - Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress - each fielding two candidates. The BJP has nominated five candidates. In the June 10 RS polls for a total of six seats, the BJP led by Devendra Fadnavis clinched all three seats despite the numbers appearing in favour of the MVA on paper. In a setback to the MVA, BJP's third nominee Dhananjay Mahadik defeated Sena's second nominee Sanjay Pawar. The role played by Independents and smaller parties in that election is discussed animatedly in the state political circles. What makes the next week's MLC elections more tricky is that MLAs have to cast votes by secret ballot. Unlike the Rajya Sabha polls, where MLAs were required to show their ballot paper to their respective party's authorised representative after casting vote, the legislative council elections will be held through a secret ballot, ...
