Strong cast, familiar tropes give "Champions" winning formula

The Farrelly brothers — Peter and Bobby — reigned supreme over comedies of questionable taste in the 1990s and 2000s (“Dumb and Dumber,” “There’s Something About Mary,” “Shallow Hal,” “Stuck on You”), but while brother Peter has gone on to the industry’s highest success, picking up best original screenplay and best picture Oscars for his film “Green Book,” Bobby hasn’t directed a film in awhile. He makes his comeback with his “Kingpin” star Woody Harrelson in the sports comedy “Champions,” an English-language remake of the 2018 Spanish smash hit, the Goya Award-winning, “Campeones.” Given the Farrelly track record of dabbling in more outre or offensive comedy, one might be bracing for what “Champions” may potentially deliver, given that it follows a minor league basketball coach, Marcus (Harrelson) who is sentenced to community service after a drunk driving accident, which is how he finds himself coaching a team of intellectually disabled adults at a local community center in Des Moines, Iowa. But after an initial fake-out, Farrelly, Harrelson and writer Mark Rizzo deftly thread the needle on “Champions,” which is for the most part warmly amusing, without diving too far into the realm of the maudlin or treacly; side-stepping anything insensitive while still enjoying some bawdy humor. You might also be thinking, “isn’t this ‘The Mighty Ducks’?”–the 1992 kids sports comedy about an attorney (Emilio Estevez) who gets sentenced to community service after a drunk driving accide...

‘Champions’ Review – The Hollywood Reporter

“There’ll always be inequality,” says one of the people with disabilities who are the real stars of the hilarious and heartwarming Champions, referring to the arrogant basketball coach given the task of turning them into a team. “But we’re teaching him to handle it.” That kind of pleasingly punchy reverse logic is typical of Javier Fesser’s fifth feature, which aims both to entertain and to tackle prejudice head on. The emotionally uplifting result, which has “labor of love” written all over it, has been Spain’s biggest box office hit to date of 2018: International presales have been healthy, with remake potential for any production team prepared to take up the challenge of replicating Champions’ freshness and fizz. Fesser’s reputation as a distinctive “outsider” director is built on zany comedies, but his finest work to date is the intense Camino, about the dangers of religion. The zany-but-thoughtful Champions brings the two sides of Fesser together, celebrating otherness at the same time as criticizing traditional attitudes to it. Marco (Javier Gutierrez) is an assistant basketball coach for a Spanish major league side who has attitude problems that have led to a separation from both his wife Sonia ( Athenea Mata) and from his coaching job as well. (At the start of the film, Marco is frankly Neanderthal in his attitudes, in a way that even remotely enlightened auds might have trouble identifying with.) After driving drunk into the back of a police car, Javier is ordered...

Woody Harrelson revels in uplifting 'Champions' story

Woody Harrelson knows what mates a good movie and once he saw the 2018 Spanish blockbuster “Campeones,” he immediately knew he wanted to make “Champions,” the American version. “Champions” is a heart-tugging comedy about a down and out basketball coach in Des Moines, Iowa, who finds himself staying out of jail by coaching a Special Olympics team known as the Friends. “I watched the original Spanish movie and was blown away. I think it’s an extraordinarily beautiful uplifting story,” Harrelson, 61, recalled of diving right in. “Jeremy, my manager, was, ‘Don’t you want to read the script?’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’ll read the script. But I’m in.’ It’s a story with so much heart and so funny — I mean, how do you pass that up?” Harrelson was instrumental in making “Champions” Bobby Farrelly’s solo directing debut. With his brother Peter, the siblings had teamed on a string of hit comedies including “Kingpin” (’96) with Harrelson. “I called Bobby because I don’t know who else could have pulled it off. It was a massive workload every day. Unbelievable,” Harrelson said of filming in Winnipeg. “He’d be shooting five scenes in a day and if he didn’t have all of that experience and the ability to say, ‘Okay, one camera goes here, this camera goes there. All right, we got this. What’s the next thing?’” ‘Champions’ would never have finished. “He just had an ability to tackle all that work where, I don’t know, some people would have been really daunted to be able to accomplish it — and a...
