Is CAT a True Story? Is the Netflix Show Based on Real Life?

Featuring nuanced performances from a talented cast, including Randeep Hooda, Suvinder Vicky, Hasleen Kaur, and Abhishant Rana, the show presents a hard-hitting picture of a man’s fight to save his sibling from an evil that plagues society. Moreover, the story delves into realistic themes such as the drug mafia and militancy, along with an authentic portrayal of how police informants function. All this may make one wonder if ‘CAT’ is related to actual people and incidents. If you’re keen to know more, allow us to appease your curiosity! Is CAT a True Story? No, ‘CAT’ is not based on a true story. Still, it does portray actual social problems, which writers Anil Rodhan, Balwinder Singh Janjua, Rupinder Chahal, and Jimmy Singh have collectively weaved into a fictional narrative. Although, they have likely drawn from true-crime incidents and general crime statistics in Punjab to create the story. In the Netflix show, the protagonist, Gurnaam, has a complicated past: he gets sucked into militancy as a young boy yet turns it around by becoming a police informant. This is not unheard of in real life, as the term CAT is used to address those who are former militants or criminal sympathizers who have now become informers that help the law apprehend militants and mafia kingpins. Specifically in Punjab, from the mid-80s to the 90s, the entire region was adversely affected by the Insurgency, an armed militant campaign by Sikh militants who demanded the creation of a separate state ca...

Cat Season 1 Review: A riveting thriller that soars on the strength of strong performances

STORY: Cop Sehtab Singh (Suvinder Vicky) compels a former CAT aka police informant, Gurnam Singh (Randeep Hooda), to infiltrate a major drug empire in Punjab to save his drug peddler brother’s life. The mission leads Gurnam to confront his dark past. REVIEW: Creator Balwinder Singh Janjua, who has previously written screenplays for films such as Saand Ki Aankh (2019), CAT is a crime thriller set in Punjab, a place besieged by cartels, cocaine and corrupt cops. The show chronicles the journey of Gary (Abhishant Rana), an innocent Sikh teenager who becomes entangled in a drug trafficking conspiracy involving gang lords, cops, and political powers. Soon after his parents were killed by terrorist Baljit Rajpuria (Gurinder Makna), Gary became a police informant known as CAT during the 1990s insurgency. Later, he adopts the identity of Gurnam Singh and leads a simple life to raise his younger siblings. When Sunny (Danish Sood), his younger brother, is arrested for drug trafficking, Gurnam is forced to seek help from a former acquaintance, Sehtab Singh. In exchange for letting his brother off the hook, Sehtab forces Gurnam to join his core team—Chandan (Pramod Pathak) and Babita (Hasleen Kaur)—on a mission to shut down the drug trade. Will he be able to save Punjab and his brother from the drugs? This eight-part series—40-45 minutes per episode—is a gripping tale of crime, brotherhood, espionage, and familial love laced with lots of drama and action. Janjua, who has co-written an...

A new thriller, which takes place in the Punjab region, shows that sometimes that people who are on the straight and narrow can get caught up in that corruption via what is initially good intentions. Opening Shot:“1990, Sialgarh, Punjab, India.” Three men with weapons walk through the murky darkness. The Gist: Back in those days, Gurnam Singh (Randeep Hooda) was a young informant, a CAT, for the Punjab police. He infiltrated a terrorist gang that killed his parents, and helped the police bring the gang down during a weapons deal. For his efforts, he and his brother and sister, both still little kids, are given a new place to live and a new identity. Now, in 2006, Gurnam is living an everyday life as a mechanic. His sister has settled with in Canada, but his brother Sunny (Danish Sood) still lives there, where he’s struggling in college. Instead of studying, Sunn...
