The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted moderate rain accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms in Chennai for the next two days until June 14. The RMC further stated that parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal can expect moderate rainfall until Thursday, June 15. Recent reports indicate that several areas in Chennai, including Egmore, Tiruvottiyur, Madhavaram, Perambur, Broadway, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Ambattur, and T Nagar, experienced moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning on Sunday, June 11. The RMC's bulletin suggests that Chennai will see partly cloudy skies over the next two days, with the possibility of some areas receiving rainfall. In contrast, parts of the state, particularly interior Tamil Nadu, are expected to face a heatwave due to soaring temperatures. The region will be characterized by hot and humid conditions. As Chennai Boils At 40 Degrees, Residents Find Ways To Brave The Heat Wave

Chennai: Chennai registered a maximum temperature of 42.7 degrees Celsius at Meenambakkam on Tuesday, 4.3 degrees above the normal. At Nungambakkam, it was 41.8 degrees, 4.4 degrees above normal. This is the third consecutive day that the maximum temperature settled above 40 degrees here. Above-normal temperatures along with heatwave conditions are expected in most parts of India till May 31. For the plains, a 'heatwave' is declared when the maximum temperature is over 40 degrees Celsius and at least 4.5 notches above normal and if it continues for 4 days. Two-wheeler commuters appear to be the worst hit in the southern metropolitan city. At 1 pm, Deva, who repairs gym equipment, took a break along the arterial Anna Salai. He has four more calls to attend across the city. "It's too hot. The worst in ten years I've seen. The last three days in particular have been too hot," he said. A group of visiting bankers from Pudukottai, who were clearly unprepared for the heat as they sheltered themselves with shawls and handkerchiefs, said that the soaring temperatures in the city were unmanageable. "No matter how much water we drink, it's not enough," one of the bankers, Arifa, said. For visitors to the Marina, the roadside shops selling fruits, juice and ice cream offered a welcome relief. Devika, a tourist from Andhra Pradesh, found respite juice shop hopping. "It's just horrible. Just this afternoon I've had lots of water, juice and lichi, all of which have helped me a lot." Jui...

Chennai sizzles at 42.6 degrees Celsius, dog days on for 10 more days

Express News Service CHENNAI: Chennai is going through one of its hottest heat spell with temperatures during the day touching 42.6 degrees Celsius. The weather stations at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded temperatures crossing 42 degrees Celsius for the first time after 11 years in June. As per the data with Indian Meteorological Department, the last time the city recorded a temperature in excess of 42 degrees in June was in 2012. On Saturday, Nungambakkam recorded 42.1 degrees, which is 4.2 degrees above normal and, according to historic data, this is the sixth hottest day ever recorded in the month of June. Meenambakkam station, located more interior near the airport, recorded 42.6 degrees, above 4 degrees from normal. The met office said hot and humid weather is likely to continue for a few more days. Weather blogger Pradeep John said at 1.30pm even areas close to the sea in the city were sizzling at 41 degrees with humidity close to 50%, which is equivalent to 45 degrees in the interior areas. The wet-bulb temperature for the city was 31.3 degree Celsius. Climate experts say anything above 30 degrees can be fatal for humans venturing outside. “It’s also very uncomfortable. In these conditions, you should avoid direct sunlight and drink lots of water,” John said. However, the regional meteorological centre officials said this doesn’t qualify as heat wave as per the IMD’s prescribed criteria. P Senthamarai Kannan, director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, told TNIE...
