Cyclone Mocha: Chennai’s Temperature Levels To Go Up During Cyclonic Storm; Why It Happens?

As per the IMD, a "cyclonic circulation has formed and lay over the southeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood at 08:30 an on Saturday". The low-pressure area (LPA) is likely to form on Monday and will turn into a depression on May 9. Thereafter, it is likely to further intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving nearly northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal. "The path of the system's movement and other parameters could be provided after the formation of the low-pressure area on Sunday. The system is under constant watch and being monitored regularly, but no advisory has been issued in regard to the cyclone," India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Director-General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said. A Yellow warning for rains along with thunderstorms has been issued for several districts of Odisha, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, and Puri. In West Bengal, officials have opened control rooms in the three coastal districts of West Bengal — South and North 24-Parganas and Purba Medinipur.

Chennai: On Monday and Tuesday, there may be significant rainfall in Chennai and the surrounding areas. During the next 48 hours, the depression is quite likely to sustain its strength and travel slowly west-northwestward toward the coastlines of north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh. The evening bulletin says, "The depression over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwestward with a speed of 6 kmph during the past 06 hours and lay centered at 600 km east of Karaikal and 630 km southeast of Chennai. It is very likely to maintain its intensity of depression and move slowly westnorthwestwards towards north In a statement, it added, "Light to moderate rain with thunderstorm & lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over South Tamilnadu. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet district of Tamilnadu and Puducherry."
