Understanding Curricular Practical Training (CPT) CPT is a form of authorization available for eligible F-1 students during their program of study for experiential learning opportunities that are necessary and integral, or required, as part of an academic program at Northeastern University. • CPT authorization must be obtained for each co-op, internship, practicum, clinical rotation, corporate residency, experiential PhD, or other approved experiential learning opportunity. • Authorization is required prior to the intended start date, whether or not the activity takes place on-campus or off-campus. • CPT can be either full-time (more than 20 hours per week) or part-time (20 hours or less per week). • Please Note: Full-time CPT that exceeds 364 days will make you ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT). • CPT can be either paid or unpaid. Whether paid or unpaid, CPT must be authorized by OGS in advance of commencing the activity. Retroactive authorization is not permitted by U.S. federal government regulations. • CPT is employer, location, full-time/part-time, and date specific. The employer’s name, address and the precise start and end dates must be authorized by OGS in advance. • Hybrid work models are acceptable work models for co-ops and other practical training experiences. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) / ENG 510 Course Policy Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is for international graduate students who: • Are on an F-1 visa • Have completed one year of academic coursework, and • For whom temporary off-campus employment during the course of their university enrollment is directly related to their major field of study and an integral or important part of their program of study Part-time CPT is 20 hours a week or less, while full-time CPT is more than 20 hours per week.For more information on CPT rules and regulations, In order to pursue CPT, international students are required to complete the CPT application and have it approved at each level: department, college*, and ISSS (*international students only need college approval if registering for ENG 510). International students cannot formally accept an internshipwithout having their CPT approved at each level. In addition, international students are required to register for the appropriate CPT course. Curricular Practical Training

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is temporary employment authorization that allows F-1 students to pursue off-campus employment that aligns with the major listed on the students I-20. Students must obtain CPT authorization (for both paid and unpaid employment) prior to beginning employment. Eligibility: • Student must receive course credit for the employment or employment must be a required component of the degree program. • Student must complete two consecutive long semesters in F-1 status before they may begin CPT. The only exceptions are as follows: • Graduate students enrolled in a program that requires immediate participation in an internship are eligible to apply for CPT in their first semester. • Students in active F-1 status at another institution who transfer their SEVIS record to UT Austin after having completed at least two long semesters of enrollment in full-time studies are eligible to apply for CPT in their first semester. • Students who have been approved for a change of status to F-1 via application to USCIS may count semesters spent in their previous status towards the two-semester eligibility requirement for CPT. • Student must be in good academic standing with the university. • Student must have an employment offer. • Employment must be related to the student's field of study listed on the I-20.
