Ganga Dussehra 2023: Date, history and significance

By India Today Information Desk: Ganga Dussehra, an important festival in India honouring Goddess Ganga, is observed on the tenth day (Dashami Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha according to the Hindu calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, this day typically falls in May or June. This festive occasion commemorates the descent of Ganga onto Earth. Notably, Ganga Dussehra is celebrated one day prior to Nirjala Ekadashi, although in some years both festivals coincide. On Ganga Dussehra, devotees wake up early, take a dip in the holy Ganga, and recite the Ganga Stotra. They offer alms to the poor and perform Ganga Aarti in the evening, presenting flowers, Diya, betel leaves, fruits, and sweets to the sacred river. Devotees also engage in meditation at the riverbank. History According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagiratha performed intense penance and prayers to Lord Brahma to bring the celestial river Ganga down to Earth. His efforts were driven by a desire to purify the souls of his ancestors who were cursed by Sage Kapila. Pleased with Bhagiratha's devotion, Lord Brahma granted his wish and requested Lord Shiva to receive the mighty Ganga in his matted locks and release her gently onto Earth. Hence, Ganga Dussehra marks the day when the holy river Ganga descended from the heavens to cleanse the sins of humankind.
