The date of Deepavali is determined by the Hindu lunar calendar, and so its date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year. There are several different legendary backgrounds for Deepavali celebrations in the Hindu writings. One story tells of how Rama returned to reclaim his throne after a 14-year banishment. Because the night when he returned was exceptionally dark, the people of his city lit clay lamps at all their houses, thus lighting the path as he made his way to his throne. Others see Deepavali as a time to honour Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of prosperity and light clay lamps at their homes so she can find them and bless them. Either way, the clay lamps which you see lighting up homes and businesses during Deepavali are the reason it is also known as “the Festival of Lights.” The more abstract meaning of the festival is a symbolic display of the triumph of light (good) over darkness (evil). Hindus traditionally rise early on Deepavali, in the wee hours of the morning to prepare for the day. First of...

DEEPAVALI

Deepavali is celebrated on the 15th lunar day of the month of Kartik in the Hindu calendar. The dates change in reference to the English calendar but usually fall between mid-October and mid-November. This year, it takes place on November 12. So, what’s the occasion? Deepavali marks the victory of good over evil. Although in Hindu mythology, there are several variations of the day’s origin, the celebration and rituals remain similar across the continent. In the weeks leading up to Deepavali, the streets of Little India are abuzz with people shopping in the bazaar, eating street delicacies from make-shift food carts, and enjoying Instagram-worthy light motifs on the streets. History of Deepavali Let’s start with the tale of ‘Ramayana,’ the most famous mythological epic in Hinduism. It is a story about one of the greatest kings of all time. Rama was the rightful king of Panchala, an ancient kingdom that predominantly covered the Indian subcontinent. But, due to family politics, he was exiled for 14 years from his home. He went to live in a forest, and his devoted wife and brother followed him. A lot happened during these 14 years, including the abduction of Sita (Ram’s wife). A great war ensued to bring back the queen, who was abducted by the evil king Ravana. This war came to be known as the greatest war of all time and symbolized the fight between good and evil. Rama won the war. By the time the war ended, 14 years of exile had also come to an end. They returned home on a ...

Diwali: What It Is and How to Celebrate in 2023

• • • • • Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is the most important national festival of the year in India, celebrating the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. It tops all other festivals with its long-lasting and multi-faith celebrations in India. The importance of Diwali for Indians is like Christmas's for Westerners. Many Indian companies take Diwali as the beginning of a new financial year. Each year over 1 billion people — Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists, on the Indian mainland and oversees communities alike — celebrate these spiritual and joyous days. For outsiders, probably the best-known parts of this festival are the dazzling burning clay lamps that line the streets, alleys, and doorways, and the rangoli — the creative and colorful designs made from powder, rice, flower petals, or sand on the floor. But for Indians, this festival has much more to it: children have vacations, employees get their bonuses, housewives enjoy shopping, homes are decorated, gifts are exchanged, and big meals are prepared. It sounds very much like Christmas, doesn't it! Diwali is even more special this year — both socially and spiritually. As the shadow cast by the coronavirus is still here, celebrating this festival is more palpable for people who are eager to get rid of the past darkness and bad luck and welcome a new life full of light and wealth. Send Diwali Wishes to Your Friends When is Diwali 2023? Diwali, like many other Indian holidays, is based ...
