Delhi Belly Movie Review {4/5}: Critic Review of Delhi Belly by Times of India

Smart and intelligent entertainer Story: Three young professionals who happen to be roommates -- Tashi (Imraan Khan), Nitin (Kunaal Roy Kapur), Arup (Vir Das) -- inadvertently become couriers for a cache of diamonds, smuggled in by a Russian gangster. The diamonds have to be delivered to a local gangster, Vijay Raaz. Unfortunately, a strange mix-up causes a weird package to be delivered to him instead. This is the beginning of the troubles of the happy-go-lucky threesome which obviously has no experience in tackling Delhi's crazy underworld. Movie Review: So who's the real hero of the film? Is it writer Akshat Verma who has given Bollywood one of its smartest scripts to hit the horizon since a long long time? As a comedy, Delhi Belly is such a refreshing change from the run-of-the-mill Hindi film laugh riot which almost always borders on the juvenile. The humour is all situational, beautifully woven in the script and never having to depend on a banana peel skid. Grow up all you comedy filmmakers who insist on treating your audience as retards! movie Is it director Abhinay Deo who tells a story peppered with the most unusual incidents in a down-to-earth, matter-of fact way which works wonders for the film? Mercifully, there is no desire on his part to shock and awe you or send you into hysterical bouts of laughter, simply because the events are so bizarre, they shock and awe you by their very nature and keep the laughs coming relentlessly. Certain sequences almost bring the...

Delhi Belly: Film Review – The Hollywood Reporter

UNION CITY, Calif. — Its theme song, “Bhaag Bhaag DK Bose,” has already become a rebellious anthem for young Indians giddy about the expletive hidden in its lyrics. And the first three minutes of Delhi Bellymake it clear that this is not a family film: Viewers bothered by butt cracks, the F-word, simulated cunnilingus and rude behavior in burqas are advised to spend their rupees elsewhere. The highjinks start when a Russian criminal gives Sonia ( Shenaz Treasuryof One Life to Live), a comely air hostess, a packet of contraband for her to courier. Sonia asks her boyfriend, journalist Tashi (Khan), to deliver it, but sight unseen, the lazy Tashi hands it off to his roommate Arup ( Vir Das, in a sparkling comic performance), who in turn carelessly passes it along to another roommate, Nitin ( Kunaal Roy Kapoor). On the way to make the delivery, the pudgy Nitin is distracted by a streetside tandoori chicken stand of dubious hygienic standards; his ensuing Delhi belly unleashes a domino effect of misunderstandings and mistaken identities — the characters soon learn that it’s unwise to mix up one’s stool sample with a million-dollar packet of black market diamonds. Delhi Belly’s supporting cast sparkles in smaller roles, especially Vijay Raazas an exasperated crime boss surrounded by incompetents and New York-based actress Poorna Jagannathan as Tashi’s problematically sexy coworker. Akshat Verma’s script is peppered with one-liners bound to become buzzwords: At the sight of a tin...

Delhi Belly: Movie Review

Director: Cast: , , , , Seeking its spirit from Guy Ritchie’s cult classic Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), more recently employed in Bollywood films like 99 and Sankat City , polishes the crime-comedy genre by a few notches despite its unrefined ambience. Three friends who share a dingy Delhi room land into trouble when a parcel of smuggled diamonds is erroneously exchanged with a stool sample. Tashi (Imran Khan), who is newly-engaged to Sonia (Shenaz Treasuryvala), rams in his car, the first gift from the in-laws, after getting into a brawl for another girl Meneka (Poorna Jagannathan). Arup (Vir Das) has just been ditched by his girlfriend for an NRI. The fatso foodie Nitin (Kunal Roy Kapoor) who is on a perpetual pooping exercise is the one responsible for all the shit that follows when an underworld don (Vijay Raaz) is behind the trio for his diamonds. While the multiple monetary rotations in Lock Stock ... (and its Indian offshoots) have been intricate, Delhi Belly doesn’t complicate the tradeoffs to that extent, yet doesn’t dilute on the essence of the original. Delhi Belly has a soul of its own with its unique characters and side-characters and imaginative situations. Writer Akshat Varma gets the grammar of the genre correct, evoking humour out of the most unusual situations – be it grim, gross or serious, making way for a perfect dark comedy. The language used blends with the setting and the dialogues range from the hilarious to laugh-out-loud moments. Th...

Delhi Belly (TV Series 2001

An excellent series based around genuine Indian food. Each episode is only around 25 minutes long but it does give a good insight into the way the locals of Delhi eat and cook. Each episode resident Indian chef, Reza Mahammad visits Delhi and the various aspects and delights of Indian foods, from the very sweet sweets to street food and everything in-between including a 100+ course meal and the largest naan bread you will ever see!. He travels around the city talking to local residents and tries different meals in cafe's and restaurants and even manages to buy a Tandoor oven to bring back to the UK. The camp Reza returns home at the end of each episode and replicates a meal in his own kitchen which he serves to Sanjeev Bhaskar. At the end of each program Sanjeev gives his usual line "Indian Food, Indian People" A very addictive series for those who enjoy cooking or eating Indian food
