Delhi Metro mishap: What went wrong

New Delhi: It was a shocking accident at a Delhi Metro construction site that killed six people and delivered a scathing blow to Delhi Metro's reputation. It was pillar number 67, now dubiously called the 'killer pillar' that gave way triggering the accident. But long before that happened, senior DMRC officials were fully aware of the cracks in the pillar - NDTV has documents which show that. Hairline cracks were first noticed on the cap of pillar 67 on the April 1 at 8:30 in the night --- the same day the Chief Program Manager inspected the site. It was ARCH consultants, who subsequently changed their name to "SKM " with their offices in Rohini, who were given the task of designing and recommending strengthening of pillar 67. NDTV tried to speak to the officers here but did not make much of a headway, The inquiry is on to determine if the design or material used was responsible. But with pressure to meet deadlines, many believe some key areas may have been overlooked.

Crack in Delhi Metro's pillar caused accident: construction workers

A large crack in a pillar of the underconstruction bridge of the Delhi Metro in south Delhi could have caused its collapse early Sunday, killing five people, say workers engaged at the accident site. HT Image Five people, including a site engineer, were killed and 15 were injured in the accident that took place at around 5 a.m. at Zamrudpur near East of Kailash, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials said. Thirty workers of the contractor company Gammon India Ltd were present at the construction site when the bridge collapsed. Many strongly criticised Gammon and DMRC authorities for negligence saying they had complained several times about a faulty pillar. Said Kishan, a construction worker present at the site: "There was a crack in the pillar and we had complained to authorities on various occasions. The engineers came and suggested that support should be given to the pillar by inserting wires and putting boulders against the pillar." Another worker said: "We told them that the crack was there and if not corrected the pillar would be faulty and would cause the segment to come crashing down - now it has." Even residents of nearby residential colonies say they had seen a "visible crack". A resident of Amar Colony, who identified himself as Dr Tiwari, told IANS: "There must have been something faulty with the design. Because we had seen a very visible crack in the pillar. We thought the stretch was still under-construction so we did not bother - but now this! Official...

Five crushed to death in Delhi metro bridge collapse

Five workers were crushed to death and 13 others injured today when a section of a bridge being built to carry Delhi's metro trains collapsed. The accident happened near the Greater Kailash neighbourhood where a 2.5-mile metal cantilever was being raised to attach to a long section of concrete girders, all of which tumbled down in a V-shape pile. Three workers died at the scene and two died later at hospital. Two of the injured workers are in a serious condition. The area was cordoned off after the accident early this morning as cranes worked to clear rubble and reopen the road underneath. Elattuvalapil Sreedharan, the managing director of Delhi metro, resigned from his position, claiming "moral responsibility" for the accident. A committee of inquiry has been set up. Sreedharan said the metro project would be delayed for at least three months, and that the collapse caused 60m rupees (£770,000) worth of damage. Two people died and at least 11 others were injured in a similar accident at a metro construction site last October. The Indian capital's metro opened in 2002, its three lines spanning 45 miles of track. Authorities are rushing to complete several extensions taking the metro's coverage to 60 miles before the Commonwealth Games in October 2010.
