Reviewed by Jessica Daniels, Biology Instructor, Minnesota State Community and Technical College on 6/28/21 Comprehensiveness rating: 3 Most body systems are covered sufficiently for a non-major’s biology class. However, the anatomy may need to be supplemented if using for a lab class (i.e. bone or muscle labeling/identification). A brief chapter on tissues would be helpful for understanding organs and systems. Although there are chapters on DNA and gene expression and meiosis, it does not have a chapter on human inheritance. A section (or chapter) on cancer with cell cycle would be helpful. It is also missing the integumentary system. Content Accuracy rating: 5 I did not find any errors or biases. Relevance/Longevity rating: 4 The content included is up-to-date. It could use more current examples to make the material more relevant to students. The modular nature of the text would allow it to be easily updated. Clarity rating: 5 The text is easy to read. Technical terms are explained. Consistency rating: 5 The text framework and organization are consistent from one chapter to the next. Modularity rating: 5 The text is divid...

AP Biology Notes: Structures of Life – Kaplan Test Prep

Five Things to Know about Structures of Life • Cells are the basic structural and functional units of all known living organisms. There are two major types: prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. • Prokaryotic cells have no real nucleus, have circular DNA, and reproduce using binary fission. Prokaryotes include archaea and bacteria. These cells are small and move via flagella. • Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus, linear DNA, highly structured cell membranes, and organelles, and they reproduce via mitosis and meiosis. Eukaryotes include protists, fungi, plants, and animals. These cells are large and move via a variety of methods including flagella and cilia. • Cell membranes are made up of a lipid bilayer that includes a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic region. Specific structures embedded within the membrane help to facilitate transport. • The cell membrane is selectively permeable, meaning it allows certain things through while keeping others out. Water diffuses across the membrane from areas of lesser to greater solute concentration (osmosis). While certain things can cross the membrane in the processes of diffusion or facilitated diffusion, which do not require energy, others require the expenditure of energy for active transport against the concentration gradient. • Nucleus: An organelle that regulates cell functions and contains the genetic material of the cell • Cytoplasm: The living matter of a cell, located between the cell membrane and the nucleus • Ribosome: An organ...

The Complete AP Biology Review Guide for 2023

Reviewing for the AP Biology exam can seem daunting. There's so much material to cover, and much of it is highly complex. However, if you plan your time well and use appropriate study materials and strategies, you can expect a great score on the exam. In this article, I'll give you an overview of what the AP Biology exam is like, what you need to know to ace it, and how you can use your study time effectively before the exam on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at 12PM! What's the Format of the AP Biology Exam? The — Like other AP tests, AP Biology has two parts: a multiple-choice section and a free-response section, each of which is worth 50% of your overall score. These sections are then divided further into different types of questions. The multiple-choice section is the first section. It consists of 60 multiple-choice questions and is one hour and 30 minutes long. Each question contains four answer choices. Although you have one minute for each question, I would recommend keeping your pace at under a minute per question on your first pass through the section. This way you'll have some extra time at the end to go back and answer any tricky questions you skipped or guessed on. There's no guessing penalty on the test, so you should answer every question, even if you have no idea which choice is correct (after you've tried to figure it out of course!). The free-response section, which also lasts an hour and 30 minutes, is made up of six questions: four short-answer questions and tw...
