Devendra Fadnavis skips government event he was to address with Eknath Shinde

KOLHAPUR: Eknath Shinde on Tuesday downplayed a row over an advertisement claiming a survey had shown him to be the more preferred choice for the CM's post than his deputy Devendra Fadnavis, as the latter skipped - citing health reasons - a government event that was to be addressed by both. Shinde said the advertisement wasn't issued by government and that the tag of 'popular CM' was "not my own credit but also that of Fadnavis and other ministers". He said, "The survey has shown that both Devendra ji and I enjoy people's backing." Shinde Sena member Dipak Kesarkar said Fadnavis had some "ear-related problem and doctors had advised him to not travel by flight". He also said the two parties (BJP and Sena led by Shinde) didn't have any differences. "There is no competition to take credit. It is very evident who is trying to create a split (between the two parties). Both the CM and the deputy CM are working like brothers," he said. When asked about the absence of Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray's photograph in the advertisement, Shinde didn't directly respond. Thackeray's absence in the advertisement prompted Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut to say, "Earlier, it was Balasaheb's Shiv Sena. But now the advertisement has cleared the air. It has become Modi-(Amit) Shah's Shiv Sena."

"Minor Scuffle," Says D Fadnavis On "Pilgrims Lathicharged" Allegation

Mumbai: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday denied reports of lathicharge on 'warkaris' by police in Alandi town in Pune district. He said a minor fight broke out between warkaris - devotees of Lord Vitthal - and the police. "There was no lathicharge on the warkari community," he told reporters in Nagpur. Opposition parties, however, claimed the police lathicharged warkaris and demanded a high-level probe and strict action. The incident occurred when devotees were scrambling to gain entry into Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Samadhi Mandir in Alandi town, 22 km from Pune city, during the ceremonial procession which is part of the annual Ashadhi Ekadashi pilgrimage to Pandharpur. "We learned from last year's stampede-like situation at the same place (Alandi) and tried giving a few number of the entry pass to various groups. It was decided to issue 75 passes to each group that participates in the pilgrimage," said Fadnavis, who handles the home portfolio. He said some 400-500 youths insisted that they would participate in the pilgrimage and won't follow the decision on the restricted allotment of entry passes. "They broke the barricades and the police tried to stop them, during which some police personnel were injured," Fadnavis said. This decision (of allotting a limited number of entry passes) was taken after a joint meeting with the principal district judge, the charity commissioner and the heads of various groups as part of the preparation for the pilg...
