I tried Devialet’s spherical new speaker and it makes Amazon Echo feel like a toy

You see, as anyone familiar with Devialet knows, Mania is built from strong stock. The French audio specialist's hits include the high-end What you've got is a futuristic eyeball-shaped wireless speaker with a delightful little handle at the top and push-push bass radiators like irises on either side. And at 2.3kg it's reassuringly heavy, almost like a kettlebell, but far more beautiful. The former uses four mics and embedded intelligence to allow the speaker to automatically adapt the audio rendering to suit its surroundings. No wafting your phone around the room, no space-age noises for several minutes, it just does its thing in a matter of seconds. I placed it on various surfaces in the aforementioned hotel suite and never noticed the calibration happening. But from the audio performance that ensued, I know in my heart (and ears) it did happen. The latter acronym involves four full-range drivers in the top portion of the speaker and those two SAM-powered subwoofers in a push-push configuration, to promise true omnidirectional stereo sound from 30Hz to 20kHz. The speaker is only 17cm tall, but close your eyes and you'll think it's much larger. Opinion: several smart speakers should be worried about Devialet's Mania –chiefly the Amazon Echo Devialet Mania: a strong aesthetic and sonic performance, however you look at it. Devialet Mania hands

Prior to today's (November 7) official product launch announcement, I was invited to experience the Mania portable speaker to get hands-on and chat to the design team behind Devialet's latest speaker. While I plan to follow up this hands-on review with an in-depth assessment and a fully rated Devialet Mania review in a few week's time, my first impression of the Devialet Mania was that it took a big step forward in sound quality expectations from a portable speaker. There's also a Mania Paris Opéra edition embellished with 24-carat 'moon gold' and comes with a docking station included. The Mania Paris Opéra 'package' costs $990 / £890 / CAD$1,300 / AU$1,700. A cloth bag is supplied, and a Devialet spokesperson told me that a sturdier protective carry case could be introduced if there's enough demand. (Image credit: Tom's Guide) Devialet Mania hands-on: Design • High-quality build and styling • Weighs 5 pounds The first thing that struck me about the ball-shaped speaker was its finessed styling. Portable speakers are usually lightweight and rugged designs built for a life on the road, but the Devialet Mania appears to shun such matters and the orb-shaped design has a highly covetable air about it. I'm not suggesting the speaker isn't durable, just that it looks so well dressed and so darn cute that I almost felt like petting it and giving it a stroke when I saw it for the first time. The Mania exudes an air of sophistication that made me feel that I would really want to tak...

Devialet Mania review: meaty, beaty, big and bouncy

The Devialet Mania isn’t quite a sphere, but it’s certainly got plenty of circles going on. The two exposed circular bass divers, for instance, sit inside a circle of shiny silver (if you choose the grey or black finishes, anyway – go for the more expensive ‘Opéra de Paris’ edition and you get a circle of matte gold instead). There’s a contoured, rubberised strip running around the circumference of the speaker, shaped to provide a handle, and with three circular controls on either side recessed in. While the 193x176x139mm (HxWxD) dimensions aren’t spherical, it certainly looks it from most angles. At 2.3kg it’s a dense little thing, too – definitely on the heavy side for slinging into a backpack and taking any further than ‘down the garden’. It’s very reassuringly constructed and finished, mind you, as that weight kind of suggests. The acoustic cloth that covers most of it is flawlessly applied and all the materials, in fact, seem upmarket. There may not be much of it, but what there is of Mania looks and feels the money’s-worth. Features & battery life: adapt and survive Devialet wants the Mania to deliver ‘360-degree stereo sound’. So as well as those exposed (and branded) bass drivers, laid out in a ‘push/push’ arrangement to try and keep cabinet resonance to a minimum, there are four full-range aluminium dynamic drivers firing at carefully calculated angles from the top of the speaker’s hemisphere. Unlike the bass drivers, they’re behind the acoustic cloth covering. Ea...

Devialet launches Mania portable speaker in two new exclusive colours

Summer has finally arrived, and that means racing out to the parks and beach for some of that summer heat. If you’re looking to take your tunes outside, French audio company Devialet has launched two new ‘seasonal’ colours for its Mania speaker. Those two colours are Sunset Rose and Sandstorm, and there’s a story behind the naming of each colourway. Devialet speaks about its Seasonal Colour Exclusive Editions as being intrinsically linked to the concept of the colour of sound or noise spectrum in the acoustic world. The Sunset Rose finish looks to pay homage to the romantic sky at dusk, while the Sandstorm version is inspired by the “suspense of time felt across untapped mineral landscapes”. That sounds very lofty to us. And to go with the colours, Devialet has crafted two playlists to reflect the inspirations of the Mania Sunset Rose and Mania Sandstorm, both of which are available to listen on streaming platforms now. The Devialet Mania, in case you’re not aware, is the French company’s first attempt at at a Placed near a wall and its onboard microphones will sense where it is and start playing music from its front speakers with the rear drivers reinforcing the overall sound. Place it in the middle of a room and it’ll play audio in 360-degree stereo, so wherever you are, you’ll experience a very similar audio performance. At £790, the Devialet Mania is not the most affordable portable speaker you’ll ever see, but if you’re in the mood for a high-end audio experience both...
