Ambedkar Jayanti traffic advisory: Mumbai Traffic Police has issued an advisory and has asked commuters to avoid certain routes around Dadar ahead of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14. This is because a significant number of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's followers are scheduled to visit Chaitya Bhoomi in Dadar on the occasion. “The 132nd Jayanti of Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar will be observed on 14h April 2023 and for that, his followers in large numbers are expected to visit Chaitya Bhoomi, Dadar, Mumbai. Considering such a huge crowd at Chaitya Bhoomi Dadar, vehicle traffic on nearby roads of Chaitya Bhoomi will be affected. Hence it is necessary to make an order for traffic management from 13h April 2023 at 23:00 hrs, till 24:00 hrs dated 14th April 2023,” the notification read. (Wikimedia Commons) The issue of separate electorates reveals fundamental differences between Ambedkar and Gandhi when it came to the issue of caste and their respective ideas of political representation for untouchables. India has a system of caste-based reservations which sets aside a certain number of seats for people belonging to castes that historically experienced social and economic discrimination. Reservations are applicable in a range of settings, such as higher education, government jobs, and even political office. There are a certain number of seats reserved for scheduled castes (SCs) and (STs) in all legislative bodies, including Parliament. While the issue of reservations is perpetually being debated, most often among upper castes who do not enjoy its ‘benefits’, it is important to note that it was not the only mode of affirmative action to have been suggested. The alternative, advocated by Dr BR Ambedkar, was the mode of separate electorates. He was the 14th and last child of Ramji Maloji Sakpal. Being a Dalit who came from a poor family, Babasaheb witnessed the atrocities and discrimination his community was subjected to. In school, Dr BR Ambedkar and other Dalit children were not allowed to touch the water or the container and someone from the higher caste would pour water for them. Babasaheb was also not allowed to sit inside the class and used to sit on a gunny sack. The social reformer vehemently opposed social evils such as untouchability and discrimination on the basis of caste and fought for the rights of the oppressed throughout his life. Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar did his graduation in Economics and Political Science from Bombay University.
