Kottarakkara attack latest in series of assaults on doctors in Kerala

Kollam: In a tragic incident, a 25-year-old woman doctor was stabbed to death by a school teacher at the Kottarakkara taluk hospital here on Wednesday. Dr Vandana Das from Kottayam, a house surgeon at the hospital, was stabbed by S Sandeep in poilce custody, while she was treating him. Health Minister Veena George condemned the incident and appealed to the public to not resort to violence against health professionals. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a statewide strike on Thursday. Emergency services will be excluded from the strike which will begin from 8 am. 'We are struck with grief when a colleague dies. But when a colleague dies in such a manner it is even more upsetting. Being stabbed in the line of duty is tragic," IMA President Dr Sulphi Noohu said. In a statement, KGMOA demanded strict action against perpetrators to prevent the recurrence of such 'diabolical' incidents. It called for exemplary punishment of attackers so that it will act as a deterrent. On March 6, a 60-year-old cardiologist was attacked at Fathima Hospital in Kozhikode by a group of people accompanying a patient. Six people attacked the senior doctor for the alleged delay in treating a pregnant woman after her child died. The doctor had sustained grievous injuries in the attack, including a nasal bone fracture and bruises on his face. The Kerala High Court, which conducted a special sitting on the murder of a young doctor, asked the state police chief to submit a report and appear online before it on Thursday. HC said that the murder of the young doctor points to a complete breakdown of the system. A division bench of Justice Devan Ramachandran and Justice Kauser Edappagath said this at a special sitting convened on Wednesday noon in the wake of the murder of Dr Vandana Das, who succumbed to multiple stab injuries inflicted upon her by a patient in Kottarakkara. The court said that it has not seen any tangible results despite a promise by the state government that it would amend the healthcare act. “When the doctor was killed in this manner, it shows a complete breakdown of the system,” the court said, according to ‘Live Law’. Justice Devan Ramachandran said that policing was to understand and anticipate the unanticipated. He said that the foremost responsibility of police is to ensure that there is no violation of law. The bench observed that police have treated the issue in a casual manner. Court said that though the accused was accompanied by police and home guard, they could not avert the ghastly incident. Sandeep, the accused in Dr Vandana Das murder case in Kerala, was sent to custody of the Crime Branch on Tuesday. He will be interrogated in custody for five days. The accused, who was in Poojappura jail, was produced in front of Judicial First Class Magistrate, Kottarakkara. The court asked investigating officers to provide medical support, if required, to the accused. It also asked the Crime Branch to allow Sandeep to meet his lawyers for 15 minutes every two days. Sandeep, a school teacher, had stabbed Dr Vandana multiple times after he was brought in for treatment at the taluk hospital, Kottarakkara, on May 10. Hours later, Dr Vandana, a house surgeon, succumbed to injuries. The incident had triggered huge protests among medical professionals who demanded the government to introduce laws to make the work environment safe. Sandeep has been showing aggressive behavior at the time of crime and later at the jail, giving an impression that he was not mentally stable. However, an expert from Peroorkada Government Hospital for mental health examined Sandeep and gave a report that he was mentally sound. He reportedly told the jail superintendent and mental health expert that he was not a drug user. Police have not received any evidence to prove that he was under the influence of drugs.
