“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

On the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Caroline Kamana from On 21st March 1960, a crowd of 5000 peaceful Pan African Congress supporters gathered near government offices in the township of Sharpeville, near Johannesburg, to protest the pass laws imposed by the apartheid regime. Under apartheid, the movement of black South Africans in designated ‘white areas’ was controlled. Being caught without the correct paperwork meant arrest and jail. Police opened fire on the crowd gathered in Sharpeville; 69 protestors were killed and 148 injured. Many were shot in the back as they fled. The dead included 40 women and eight children. Sharpeville was a watershed moment. The eyes of the world were opened to the horrors of apartheid and its structures. Six years later, in commemoration of this massacre, the United Nations nominated 21st March as the Nelson Mandela is a worldwide human rights icon and un-paralleled role-model for advocates of peace, justice and positive change. In the face of unspeakable violence and terror, he urged the people of South Africa to come together and reconcile. In South Africa today, the 21 st March is celebrated today as Human Rights Day; a day of commemoration for lives lost during the fight for democracy and equal rights. Nelson Mandela’s words are often quoted, but how do we harness their transformational power? nd June, brings to the fore the struggle against racial discrimination through the narratives of Nelson Mandela...

“Education is the Most Powerful Weapon Which You Can Use to Change the World”

If you haven’t heard the name “Nelson Mandela”, you might have been living under a rock. Born in the early 1900’s, he was the first in his family to ever receive a formal education. Mandela joined the African National Congress – South Africa’s governing social democratic political party in 1943 as an activist bec0ming a general secretary by 1947 – right before the apartheid took place (History in an Hour, 2012). Mandela spent 27 years in prison because he refused to compromise with his country’s “white supremacist government” (Boston Globe, 2013) During his imprisonment, he refused to give up on humanity and yet emerged graceful, compassionate and a forgiving individual. One of his famous quotes is “A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination, but when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special.” To Nelson Mandela, education was everything and he used his education experience extremely well. On the other hand, South Africa’s current president, Jacob Zuma, has never had formal education. Throughout his political career, he has been charged with corruption numerous times – each time charges were dropped, and charged with rape – although that was eventually ruled consensual. Despite the corruption that runs rampant with the current South African president, the South African population can relate to him because a lot are uneducated (Bio, 2016). Despite the fact that South Africa spends more gross domestic product on educ...

Education Is The Most Powerful Weapon

School has always been important to me, ever since I first started kindergarten. When I think about it, most of my life has revolved around school and doing work for school. It’s an interesting thought- education is everywhere, despite its differences in quality, and whether you decide to pay attention to it or not. Education is the most powerful tool in the world- whatever we are taught, we believe it’s true. Imagine, for your whole life, you were taught that the country you live in is the only one that exists in the world- and then later you find out that this isn’t true at all. We depend so much on education without fully realizing it. Education can be many things- someone’s downfall, someone’s liberation, or someone’s escape. We rely on schooling to open our eyes to the rest of the world, assist us in getting good jobs, and keep us on our toes. One of the saddest things that can happen to a person is to be denied access to good quality education- or any type of education. Our futures depend on the type of education we receive and how far we take it. Imagine having a home life that doesn’t place any importance on continuing school, or thinks that higher education is nearly impossible to achieve. From a young age, students in this type of environment are discouraged from believing they’re capable of more. This tends to occur more in lower income schools. These type of students aren’t getting any outside help or encouragement- making it difficult for them to keep up with ...

We can change lives, worlds with a powerful weapon: education

We often hear about school districts in major cities in which only a quarter to a third of graduating seniors are reading or understanding math at grade level. Although we are blessed with an excellent system and strong leadership in Brevard Public Schools (BPS), the community can do more to support BPS and some of our brightest students. Support must start when they are younger —in the third grade, when they are not only learning to read but reading to learn. Starting this fall, Aspiration Academy, with the blessing and support of BPS Superintendent Dr. Mark Mullins and a host of other educators, will begin a dynamic after-school mentoring program at University Park Elementary School in Melbourne. Aspiration Academy will mentor and coach some third-grade students after regular school hours and will augment the already excellent Gifted and Talented program offered at BPS. These students will also benefit fromcultural opportunities on weekends such as trips to Kennedy Space Center, Brevard Zoo, Daytona Children's Museum, and other similar locations. While many students never have experiences such as these due to financial considerations, such outings are a significant tool in the learning process. University Park was chosen primarily because of the leadership of Principal Ana Diaz and the wonderful school staff.Additionally, the school has a vibrant mixture of racial, cultural, and religious representation. Aspiration Academy students will be chosen by the school's teachers....

Education: The Most Powerful Weapon

Education: The Most Powerful Weapon “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” -Nelson Mandela Back then, my class teacher would refer to this quote literally every day so it stuck with me, many times we would even recite it alongside her. But growing up, I realized that as powerful as education is, not everyone has access to it and if we changed the world, it wouldn’t be one person to do so. In times like this, I’m very grateful for the likes of Dolly Children Foundation and other Non-profit organizations interested in sponsoring children and people with little or no access to paid education. Nelson Mandela rightly said that ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’ If you want to grow and be successful, you need to be educated! Society is made of up different kinds of people and the mindset of each of them differs a lot. An educated one can guide to the right path in a better manner, and he/she can come up with a variety of ideas which may be related to political participation, social equality or environmental sustainability. The Dolly children aren’t stopping at one child, our goal is for us to reach the unreached till no one is left. Author: Mowaninuoluwa Akinnagbe
