Values are a society's general ideas about what is perceived as good and desirable for a society. For example, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are values that people in the When the issue is addressed, it is frequently framed as a debate within the discipline about whether the family is in decline, as some scholars proclaim (Popenoe 1988), or merely changing, as others assert (Coontz 1997; Skolnick 1991; Stacey 1992, 1999). Proponents of the family in decline camp cite high divorce rates, a high of rate out-of-wedlock births, an increased proportion of single-parent households, and the continued rise of individualism as evidence of the decline of family life and diminished family values. A On the other hand, proponents of the family is changing perspective argue that the family itself is socially defined and as such acts upon and responds to a society's unique social, economic, and political environment. Those writing from this view, as does Steven Nock (1999), maintain that: "Institutions like the family are bigger than any individual. So when large numbers of people create new patterns of family life, we should consider the collective forces behind such novel arrangements." Side-stepping a definition of family valu...

Importance of Family Values

Many people don't think about their family values until a crisis arises that forces them to make decisions that may go against their beliefs. While they may have never identified their values, all of a sudden they are faced with the realization that something doesn't quite fit into what they believe in. This is when people realize how important family values are to the structure and operation of their family system. Influencing Decision Making Family values influence the decisions people make both within the family structure and outside of it. Making a decision about important topics can be difficult, and people may feel helpless if they don't know which way to proceed. Therefore, having solid family values helps people make the right decisions in life. Protection from Outside Influences Peer pressure can have a considerable effect on adolescents and adults alike. When people try to get others to do things that are not morally correct, they try to penetrate the family values set in place. However, to find compatibility you need to know what you believe in, so you know what to look for when searching for a mate or friend. Families with strong values...

Learning Family Values From My Grandchildren – The Moderate Voice

Every time I hear someone say our nation is going to hell in a hand basket, I think of my two grandchildren. There is a major disconnect in hearing a national discourse towards Armageddon and seeing children develop through the eyes of a grandparent. In my eyes, Lauryn, 10, and Adam, 8, will not be burdened by a national debt passed onto their shoulders by the hapless decisions of their elders and others before them. Rather, they will be responsible human beings carving out a life of their own and making the world less wicked. Of course, this is a loving grandparent’s dream who has seen war from afar, racial strife up close and personal and economic downturns forcing desperate but bad decisions. Yet, we remain optimistic. How can one believe otherwise when at their tender ages they know and live the basics: Love and respect for their peers and elders. Only now we are judging from glimpses of their actions a rosy future that is good and wholesome and the essence of family values. A year and a half ago, Lauryn set out to achieve her first goal in life: Earning a junior black belt in karate. Trust me, it was not given to her because of 100% attendance and her parents paying class tuition. And, yet, when you ask how she feels about it, a one-word answer follows: “Great.” Her eyes say much more. Lauryn still is a scrawny, pretty little moppet, faster than a speeding bullet and equipped with tools of the trade that can knock a grown man to his knees. Pity the first bully she enc...
