A two-day Flamingo bird festival is all set to commence at the Pulicat lake town of Sullurupeta in Nellore district on Saturday. The district administration, in association with the local people’s representatives, has made wide-ranging arrangements. Tourists and local visitors are expected to visit in large numbers both at the Pulicat lake and also at the Nelapattu bird sanctuary to see the wide variety of migratory birds there. For their convenience, the officials have arranged boating facility at the BV Palem point of the lake. The Forest Department with the help of the local fishermen has made necessary arrangements for the same. Sports and cultural programmes and dance shows have been organised for the two-day festival. The government released funds to the tune of Rs. 1 crore to celebrate the festival as a State event. Stating that all efforts are being made to attract tourists in the district, Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana said that Nellore region and its surroundings have huge tourist potential in terms of nature and also beach tourism. Pointing out that a small country like Singapore is equipped with world class tourist infrastructure which earns that government annual revenue of Rs. 2 lakh crore, Mr. Narayana said that it would be possible to develop tourist facilities along similar lines if focused efforts were made with active participation of one and all. Tirupati: Clouds shrouded on the much-awaited Flamingo festival at Pulicat Lake in Sullurpet mandal of the district for the third consecutive year. The previous two years this famous festival could not be held due to the Covid pandemic while the bird lovers were eagerly waiting to enjoy the visual treat this time. Still, the fund crunch seems to become a major hurdle in conducting the event and the uncertainty is yet to be cleared. The Flamingo festival is normally held around January every year at Pulicat Lake and Nelapattu bird sanctuary draws huge crowds. Birdwatchers and other visitors from even far off places throng the area with pomp and gaiety. A good number of migratory birds, especially Flamingos, visit the Pulicat Lake area around November while the three-day festival normally is held any time before January. Past experiences reveal that around 10,000 to 12,000 migratory birds belonging to 80 different species reach Pulicat in winter for breeding. After the breeding season is over, they leave for their native region along with their fledglings. The intention of starting this annual festival in 2001 was to generate revenue for the tourism department. Several competitions and cultural programmes become part of the festival. It was last held in January 2020 but could not be organised in the next two years due to the Covid pandemic. By Express News Service NELLORE: The state may put off the Flamingo Festival this time to keep the Covid-19 situation under control. Even though it is the last week of December, the government is yet to take a call on holding the seasonal festival. The three-day event is conducted between November and January to promote tourism in Sullurpeta and Nellapatu. It is during this season that hundreds of different varieties of migratory birds arrive at the Pulicat brackish water lake surroundings in search of food. The State forest department has been allowing visitors to Nelapattu sanctuary since November. “The bird sanctuary is now open to the public. However, the State government is yet to take a call on organising the Flamingo Festival,” said sources in the district administration. The Flamingo festival is organised at Tada, Sullurpeta and Doravarisatram areas, for which the administration arranges buses to the bird sanctuary and boating in the Pulicat. In last edition of the festival, held from January 3 to 5, over five lakh visitors participated. Flamingo Festival: road shows to be organised Officials say film artistes will be involved to mobilise support. A panoramic video prepared with the help of a helicopter robot video camera was also shown to the visitors. This will be shown at the venues of the festival during the three days. January 03, 2015 12:26 am | Updated 12:26 am IST - NELLORE: The government has decided to organise road shows to mobilise wide support and participation in the Flamingo Festival to be organised at the rocket town of Sullurupeta near Sriharikota space centre in the Pulicat lake surroundings from January 9 to 11. The road shows will be organised in Chennai, Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Nellore to attract the attention of the public and domestic tourists on the eve of the popular festival. As part of this, the district officials and people’s representatives said that the film artistes, noted cultural troupes and experts would be involved in mobilising support for the event. The festival is being seen as an occasion to increase awareness on the potential for the eco-tourism and migration of Flamingos from far off places like Siberia to the Pulicat lake surroundings.
