New Delhi The launch window for Chandrayaan-2 was successfully launched and inserted into lunar orbit in 2019. (PTI)(HT_PRINT) Speaking to HT, Somnath said, “We have a small launch window for Chandrayaan-3, which opens from July 12. We will, however, be announcing a final date for the launch soon.” HT on May 22 reported that the launch of the much-awaited mission is likely to happen on July 12 and the lunar touchdown is expected on August 23. Chandrayaan-3, which consists of an indigenous lander module, a propulsion module and a rover, is aimed at developing and demonstrating new technologies required for interplanetary missions. The lander will have the capability to soft land at a specified lunar site and deploy the rover, which will carry out in-situ chemical analysis of the lunar surface during the course of its mobility. The lander and the rover will have scientific payloads to carry out experiments on the lunar surface. History of ISRO With the scientist Vikram Sarabhai‘s immediate understanding of the need for space exploration, Jawaharlal Nehru created the Indian National Space Research Committee (INCOSPAR) in 1962 under the DAE (Atomic Energy Department). When DAE took over INCOSPAR’s development in 1969, ISRO was born. In 1972, the Indian government formed the Space Commission and the Space Department (DOS), which housed ISRO. During the forthcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US later this month, space cooperation and critical technologies under ‘initiative on critical and emerging technology’ (iCET) umbrella are topping the agenda. These astronauts who were shortlisted from the Indian Air Force (IAF) have already undergone extensive training at the Star City Cosmonaut training center, Russia in 2020. This training was part of Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight Programme of ISRO which also includes development of a crewed spacecraft that would launch on a version of ISRO’s GSLV Mark 3 project. Both NASA and ISRO are expected to cooperate on the American space agency’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) programme.
