Partners When we use the term Member of Parliament (MP) in the UK, we mean a Member of the House of Commons, the elected chamber of Parliament (as opposed to the un-elected Who do MPs represent? Each MP represents the constituency that elected them – their “seat” – including both those who did and who did not vote for them, as well as those who are unable to vote or didn’t turn out. In this capacity, MPs spend much of their time dealing with local casework, helping particular problems that individuals bring to them. This part of their role has grown rapidly in recent decades, arguably to the detriment of their work on other matters. But beyond their constituency work, MPs are still act as individuals. They don’t just represent the residents of a geographical locale or even the views of the public in general, but apply their own judgement to matters requiring decisions. There has long been a tension between the mandate to express the views of constituents and the imperative to exercise discretion. And in this era of social media and digital networked communications, the pressure to conform to outside opinion rather than exercise personal judgeme...

A gold medallist in Philosophy, Shivraj Chouhan has been a political leader since childhood. In 1976-77, he participated in underground movement against Emergency and was imprisoned. He has always taken part in various political agitations and fought for public causes. In 1990, he was elected to the state Legislative Assembly from the Budhni constituency. In 1990, he became a member of the 10th Lok Sabha from Vidisha constituency. He was re-elected to the 11th and 14th Lok Sabha from the same constituency. In 2005, he was appointed as the BJP President, Madhya Pradesh and in the same year, he went on to become the Chief Minister of the state. In 2008 Assembly elections, he once again led the party to victory in the state elections and assumed the position of Chief Minister for the second time. Developments As the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Chouhan has been focussing on improving education, generating employment, uplifting the scheduled castes, rehabilitating the slums, among other initiatives. He has always been a supporter of women empowerment and has undertaken several steps to protect the girl child, improve the health and socio-economic security of women.
