Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh Review

The yudh in the title of the film, writer-director Rajkumar Santoshi's first venture in a decade, refers as much to a bitter tussle between the two sharply divergent ideologies that Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse represent as it does to a war to uphold the truth in a fact-free world overrun by divisive forces. Barring Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, no leader of India's freedom struggle is subjected to abhorrent myths and sought to be discredited as much as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is. Gandhi Godse: At first flush, Ek Yudh looks like an honest attempt to clear the air. The film is a reductionist, revisionist recreation of the assassination of the Father of the Nation by a Hindu zealot and an imagined aftermath. In trying to get its point across, it does a balancing act that appears to negate the gravity of the crime. A period drama not only alters history to facilitate a face-to-face debate between Gandhi and Godse, but also ill-advisedly seeks to draw a parallel between a leader who stood up to the might of the British empire and mobilised an entire nation to fight for freedom and a man driven by hate and bigotry. Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh means well overall but does not fare particularly well in imagining of what the Mahatma would have said to, and done with, Godse had he not succumbed to the bullets the latter fired on January 30, 1948. Quickly getting the assassination out of the way, the film veers away from history and into the domain of fiction. Gandhi's battle to create ...

Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh Movie Review: A pallid debate and naive in its stance

Story: Mahatma Gandhi survives Godse’s attempt to assassinate him in this fictionalised story. The duo comes face-to-face in jail and debates their respective ideologies. Review: MK Gandhi’s assassination and whether Nathuram Godse was justified have always been moot, especially of late. Rajkumar Santoshi’s latest offering attempts to present both sides through a face-off between the event’s main characters, Gandhi (Deepak Antani) and Godse (Chinmay Mandlekar). The movie begins with the India-Pakistan Partition and the communal violence that ensued. It quickly establishes the Hindu and Sikh populations’ gripe against Gandhi for their suffering. Nathuram Godse’s anger and Bapu’s assassination also follow soon enough. However, the film’s pace dips after that, and the narrative drags all of the first half to set the context. It covers some crucial events, such as Gandhi’s fast unto death for Hindu-Muslim peace and the conditions to end it. The discussion on Gandhi vs Godse has raged on since 1948, but the film is pallid in presenting their debate, as such, as they are cooped up in the same jail cell. The protagonists’ respective ideologies, actions and stances find a space, but their war of words is not compelling enough. Through the Gram Swaraj Movement, the outing also touches upon social issues such as untouchability and casteism and Gandhiji’s attempts to address economic or humanitarian exploitations and forge equality and justice. These are cursorily portrayed through i...

Rajkumar Santoshi Interview: Why The Indian Director Made ‘Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh’

A still from Rajkumar Santoshi's new Hindi film 'Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh'. Santoshi Productions Indian filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi, best known for his films such as The Legend of Bhagat Singh, returns to direction after ten years with his latest release Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh. Based on the play [email protected] written by Santoshi recalls he was working on one of Wajahat’s plays titled Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya O Jamyai Nai when he came across the play [email protected]. The filmmaker immediately loved it and wanted to adapt it onscreen, but the playwright was not too sure. “He ( writer Wajahat) thought it was not cinematic material but I immediately knew this should be made into a film.” Santoshi then explains why he wanted to make the film. “Godse was a victim of injustice. After he shot Gandhi, he not only admitted that he did it, but also explained why he did it. He talked about it in the court, but his voice was muffled. It was only a few years ago that the court allowed it for people to know.” Books have been printed detailing Godse’s court statement and his brother, Gopal Godse also wrote elaborated on why he killed Gandhi, but their sale was banned for a long time in India. Santoshi adds, “Similarly, Gandhi has been accused of many things and he never got the chance to clarify so I thought this situation where both the leaders share their views, as per their real ideologies (may find audience and should be created on the screen). Maybe people will watch and discuss, and then...
