The 36 best Google Doodle designs

The Google Doodle wasn't invented along with the advent of Google. In fact, one of the most noted things about the Google homepage was its simplicity: it consisted of a logo and a search bar. But in 1998, founders Sergey Brin and Larry page journeyed to the Burning Man festival and wanted to notify users of their absence in case servers crashed. A little Burning Man-style stick figure was added to the logo, as a novel out-of-office message. It was a hit, and so the Google Doodle arrived. An outside contractor took on the Google Doodle design brief until 2000, when Brin and Page asked PR guy Dennis Hwang to design a logo for Bastille Day. Ever since then, a team called 'Doodlers' have organised and published Google Doodles regularly. Over time, Google Doodles have evolved from simple logo tweaks to full-blown illustrations, animations and beyond. Google is known for its hidden treasure elsewhere, too. The research project built an algorithm trained on a personal dataset of lyrics that was used to generate the poetic responses to everyday questions. Alex Fefegha runs a design invention studio in London. His work explores the collaborative interactions between humans and machines, and prototypes future visions into new tangible interactive experiences.
