Google Maps' Historical Street View Imagery Now Available on iOS

Google Maps' Street View is When in Street View mode, users can access the historical imagery by first tapping anywhere on the photo to see information about the location, and then selecting "see more dates" to access the current location's historical imagery. Google says the feature can show imagery dating all the way back to the launch of Street View in 2007, albeit in locations where it was available at the time. The ability to display historical imagery has been available on the desktop version of Google Maps since 2014, but this is its debut on the mobile app. Coinciding with Street View's 15th anniversary, Google has also announced that it will deploy a new camera next year to capture more high-quality images in harder to reach places. In addition to our Street View car and trekker, we're piloting a new camera that will fully roll out next year to help us collect high-quality images in more places. This new camera takes all the power, resolution and processing capabilities that we've built into an entire Street View car, and shrinks it down into an ultra-transportable camera system that's roughly the size of a house cat. But unlike house cats, it's ready to be taken to remote islands, up to the tops of mountains or on a stroll through your local town square. Soon, when you use Google Maps Immersive View, you'll be able to preview bike lanes, sidewalks, intersections and parking on your route. The route view is available for those who are driving, walking and even biking. The app will use AI and historical driving trends to show you what traffic might look like depending on what time you'll be on the road. For instance, if you're driving to work at 8 a.m., Immersive View may show a slew of cars versus just a few cars if you're taking a nice evening cruise. You'll also be able to see air quality information and how weather changes the route throughout the day by using the time slider. For example, it may be sunny when you leave your house in the morning but rain could bring in cooler weather that would prompt you to grab a jacket and rain boots. Can you believe it? It’s been 15 years since the development and rollout of the Google Street View car, that awesome little vehicle with a 360-degree camera attached to the top like a big lollipop. To celebrate, Google Maps has added a new Street View car mode that lets you cruise around as – you guessed it – the Google Street car. Here’s how you can activate and use it as your personal vehicle. What can you do with the Street View car? As a fun little feature of the How to turn on the Street View car in Google Maps Since this feature is brand new, there’s a chance you might see Google Maps prompting you to turn on the Street View car once you start a route. In that case, you can follow those prompts and get access to the custom vehicle. If you don’t see the prompt, you can still switch your map icon to the Street View car. Here’s how: • On your device, open up Google Maps. • Find a place you want to start a fake route to and hit Start. • You should see your current map icon – a blue arrow or dot. • Living You Can Now Use Google Maps' Street View to Travel Back in Time—Here's How to Use the Interactive Feature Whether you want to view early iterations of your childhood home or experience New York City's Times Square as it was when you visited in the 2010s, the function can be used to see street-level views from over a decade ago. • Open Google Maps and type in the address you're interested in viewing—it can be as simple as the location of your childhood home or something as exciting as the Trevi Fountain in Italy. • Once you've entered the address of your chosen destination, Google will populate a road map of the area. • In the lower right hand corner, click on the person icon and move it onto the map to access the latest street-level photo of the area. • Now, you're ready to time travel. Once you've accessed the interactive street view of your location, look in the upper left hand corner of the screen and you'll see a small clock symbol next to a date. • Click on the clock and a slide-bar will appear with available years listed. Move the bar forward and backward to see photos of that specific destination throughout the years. If you've chosen a location that doesn't have the time function, it's possible Google doesn't have older images available in its archive. For this reason, the tool works best for viewing areas that receive high foot traffic—such as Times Square in New York City—as they are more regularly photographed by Google.
