Karnataka govt formation highlights: Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar meet governor, stake claim to form govt

Karnataka govt formation LIVE Updates: After a four-day wait, the Congress party has formally announced that Siddaramaiah will be named the new Karnataka chief minister, and DK Shivakumar is set to be his sole deputy. Celebrations were in full swing at Siddaramaiah's native village and outside his residence in Bengaluru, with supporters displaying banners, pouring milk over his posters and raising slogans. Karnataka Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar meet governor Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot. The CM and deputy CM, along with a few other ministers, will be sworn in to their new roles at Bengaluru's Kanteerava stadium on Saturday at 12:30pm, KC Venugopal said. Reports said the grand old party talked about a rotational tenure of two-and-a-half years each for both the leaders, however, there was no talk on this at the party briefing confirming the CM announcement. Kharge is said to have come to the decision after hectic meetings for the past three days with the party's high command - Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, the two contenders, leaders from Karnataka, the Congress central observers and newly-elected MLAs, among others. The Congress party emerged as the single largest party in Karnataka after witnessed a big win in the May 10 assembly election, securing 135 seats and giving the state a decisive mandate. Amid Cabinet reshuffle buzz, eight States get new Governors

Ahead of a much anticipated Cabinet reshuffle at the Centre, Rashtrapati Bhawan has announced a slew of gubernatorial appointments, including that of Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawarchand Gehlot as Governor of Karnataka, replacing Vajubhai Vala. This was the surest sign that a Cabinet reshuffle, regularly postponed since the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, will finally come to pass as early as Wednesday evening or Thursday morning. Apart from Mr. Gehlot, among the fresh appointees are former MP and former BJP president of the erstwhile combined State of Andhra Pradesh K Hari Babu as Governor of Mizoram, senior BJP leader and former Tribal Affairs Minister in Gujarat Mangubhai Patel as Governor of Madhya Pradesh and former Speaker of the Goa Assembly Rajendra Arlekar as Himachal Pradesh Governor. Mr. Arlekar is the first Goankar to be made Governor in the State’s history. Several Governors have seen a change in States, including former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, who has been transferred from Himachal Pradesh to Haryana; senior BJP leader from Chattisgarh Ramesh Bais, who has been moved from Tripura to Jharkhand; Satyadev Arya transferred from Haryana to Tripura; and BJP leader from Kerala S Sreedharan Pillai going from Mizoram to Goa. Karnataka minister defends son inaugurating free bus service scheme for women

Karnataka minister K Venkatesh's son Nitin inaugurated the free bus travel scheme for women in the Periyapatna constituency in Mysore district at a government event. When the minister was asked why his son headed the inauguration of the state scheme despite not holding any government posts, he said that his son was invited to the event. By Nagarjun Dwarakanath: The Karnataka government's 'Shakti' scheme which provides free travel for women on state-run buses was inaugurated in the Periyapatna constituency in Mysore district by the son of state minister K Venkatesh. The minister's son Nitin was seen on stage lighting a lamp with other government officials and giving a speech during the inauguration event. The son of Karnataka's Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences minister, K Venkatesh, headed the inauguration of the free bus travel scheme for women in the Periyapatna constituency. However, he doesn't hold any post in the government and neither is he an elected representative.
