Oscar entry 'Chhello Show' hits theatres, makers list challenges to make 'a film about films'

As Gujarati film 'Chhello Show' (Last Film Show), India's official entry for the Oscars 2023, arrived in theatres on Friday, its writer-director Pan Nalin recalled how the project was born out of one of his visits to Amreli to meet his father when he learnt about a cinema projectionist eking out a living by selling vegetables. 'Chhello Show', which will represent India in the best international feature film category at the Oscars, is set in rural Gujarat and follows the story of a nine-year-old boy who begins a lifelong love affair with cinema when he bribes his way into a rundown movie palace and spends a summer watching movies from the projection booth. Something about the way the movie made us feel, or the crowd with whom we saw it, has left an indelible imprint on our memories. image credit: stirworld The rebellious Samay returns to try to see movies for free after skipping schoolwork and abandoning family obligations but is quickly booted out. He befriends the nice projectionist Fazal (Bhavesh Shrimali), who allows him to view films from the projection booth in exchange for his tiffin, which Samay’s mother fills with love and Gujarati delicacies (Richa Meena). The scenes in which she prepares these meals are extremely entertaining to watch. Soon, Samay is learning the craft as an assistant and working out how to build his own projection booth and theatre. The Film Federation of India (FFI), on September 20, announced that Chhello Show is India's official entry for the 'Best International Feature Film' category at the Academy Awards/Oscars 2023. Titled Last Film Show in English, the movie is a Gujarati coming-of-age drama and is slated for a country-wide release on October 14. The Oscars are scheduled to take place on March 12 in Los Angeles, California. Chhello Show's plot and cast Directed by Pan Nalin, the movie is based on a plot that draws inspiration from the director's own life of falling in love with cinema at a young age. The story is set in a remote rural village of Saurashtra and revolves around a nine-year-old boy named Samay (played by Bhavin Rabari), who begins a lifelong love affair with cinema and spends an entire summer watching movies from the projection booth of a rundown movie theatre. According to FFI president TP Aggarwal, "Chhello Show" was unanimously chosen over films such as SS Rajamouli's "RRR", Ranbir Kapoor-led "Brahmastra: Part One Shiva", Vivek Agnihotri's "The Kashmir Files" and R Madhavan's directorial debut "Rocketry". "The 17-member jury unanimously chose 'Chhello Show'. There were a total of 13 films of different languages including six in Hindi -- 'Brahmastra', 'The Kashmir Files', 'Anek', 'Jhund", "Badhaai Do' and 'Rocketry' -- and one each in Tamil ('Iravin Nizhal'), Telugu ('RRR'), Bengali ('Aparajito') and Gujarati ('Chhello Show') as well as few others," Aggarwal told PTI. Pan Nalin’s Indo-French co-production Chhello Show ( The Last Film Show) has been selected as India’s official entry to the 2023 Oscars. Suparn Sen, the secretary of the Film Federation of India, confirmed the news. This small Gujarati film has also received tremendous response from studios like Samuel Goldwyn Films in the USA, Orange Studios in France, Shochiku Films in Japan, etc. After the announcement, Pan Nalin took to Twitter and wrote, “OMG! What a night this going to be! Gratitude to Film Federation of India and thank you FFI jury members. Thank you for believing in Chhello Show. Now I can breathe again and believe in cinema that entertains, inspires and enlightens!” He says,”I could have never imagined such a day would come and bring light and celebration of light.
