Gulzar Shayari: Gulzar was born Sampooran Singh Kalra into a Sikh Family in British India ( now known as Pakistan) on 18 August 1934. Later, they moved to Delhi after India’s partition. Partition took a toll on his living condition, due to which he had to halt his education to work to support his family, living in Mumbai (then called Bombay). However, he earned his living while doing odd jobs like mixing colors to match the paint shades to fix the accidental cars at a motor garage. Doing such easy and non-laborious tasks gave him ample time to read, write, attend classes in college and be a part of PWA (Progressive Writers Association). His father, Makhan Singh Kalra, was initially not a big fan of Sampooran being a writer. Despite his rebuke and opposition, he undertook his passion and adopted the pen name Gulzar Deenvi which he eventually shortened to Gulzar. He was fond of Bengali culture through his Gurus Bimal Roy and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. One turning point that made him ponder his love for literature was during his school time when he read the translations of the work of Rabindranath Tagore. The critical point when he decided to become a writer was reading “The Gardener” by Rabindranath Tagore.
