Sam Curran. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) All teams were expecting their top players to step up and deliver their best in the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to fare well. Earlier, at the 2023 mini-auction held in December 2022, some records purchases were done by the franchises to reserve the services of players who had performed exceptionally in international cricket a few months ahead of the important auction. With 2023 having marked its conclusion and CSK emerging as champions, it’s time to analyze the performances of players who got a hefty amount and became the most expensive players for their franchises. Some of them justified their role in their teams with their overwhelming performances while a few players couldn’t live up to the expectations. (Note- GT and RCB have not been considered in this analysis as their most expensive picks got ruled out of the tournament while KKR's second most expensive buy has been considered due to applicable data) Here is the performance of the most expensive players of each team 1. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)- David Wiese (INR 1 crore) At the IPL 2023 auction, Shakib Al Hasan had become the most expensive player in the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) 2023 squad. The Bangladesh legend was picked up for INR 1.5 crore at the auction but in the tournament, he didn’t participate and to fill his shoes, the two-time IPL champions signed up England opener Jason Roy. Following Shakib, Namibia player David Wiese had become the second mo...

Harry Brook feeling pressure of price tag in IPL 2023? Here's why the Kohli

Harry Brook came into the IPL 2023 season with a big reputation of being one of the most talented young talents so much so that England’s Test captain Ben Stokes tipped him to find all-format success like Virat Kohli. Harry Brook was in sensational form in Tests last year, hitting 4 hundreds in just 6 Tests since his debut. The England youngster has scored at close to 140 in T20Is for England. More than Brook’s impressive arrival in Test cricket, it was his numbers in previous Pakistan Super League (PSL) campaign that gave many the confidence that he could crack the code in IPL. England’s Test Captain Be Stokes tipped him to find all-format success like Virat Kohli In the 2022 edition of the PSL, Brook had scored 264 runs for Lahore Qalandars in eight innings, which included a century, at a strike rate of 171.4. In numbers in Test cricket, has however been more eye-catching. In 10 innings, he has scored 809 runs with four centuries and three fifties. His stunning run led England Test captain Ben Stokes to compare Brook with Kohli, backing the youngster to replicate former India captain’s success across formats. “He’s one of those rare players that you look across all formats and you can just see him being successful everywhere. It’s a massive shout, but Virat Kohli is one of those guys where his technique is just so simple and works everywhere. The pressure that he puts back onto opposition is exactly what we’re about,” Stokes had said last December after Brook’s century i...

Harry Brook hits first century of IPL 2023 for SRH vs KKR

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Harry Brook slammed the first hundred of IPL 2023 against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Friday. The 24-year-old Brook, SRH’s most-expensive signing (Rs 13.25 crore) at the December 2022 auction, converted his maiden half-century in the tournament into the highest score so far this season. Brook recorded his second T20 ton off just 55 balls in the final over, laced with 12 fours and three sixes. Sunrisers finished on 228 for four, the highest total of the season and the highest-ever by a visiting team at the Eden Gardens. After falling for 13 and 3 while batting in the middle-order, Brook was promoted to the opener’s slot in SRH’s previous game where he scored 13 runs. Brook finally came into the zone in his fourth outing as SRH was sent into bat by KKR. The Englishman immediately took a liking to KKR pacer Umesh Yadav, smashing three fours and two maximums in his two-over spell in the PowerPlay. While a couple of wickets and the KKR spinners slowed him down, Brook bid his time patiently to reach fifty off 32 balls before the pacers returned. Brook hammered pacer Lockie Ferguson for four fours and a six in the 15th over before waltzing past Shikhar Dhawan’s 99 to record the highest individual score of the season. Brook is the fifth English batter to score a hundred in the IPL after Kevin Pietersen, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow. He is also the joint-third quickest to an IPL ton in four innings.

4. Harry Brook (13.25 Cr) England's young batting sensation Harry Brook was the center of attraction ever since he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad. SRH got Harry Brook or INR 13.25 CR by beating Rajasthan Royals at the auction table. Since his Test debut, he has taken world cricket by storm. Former legends of the game speak highly of him and regard him as someone who'll dominate in the years to come. Brook was coming off from a fabulous PSL and a Pakistan tour. He was expected to perform the same in this cash-rich league. But in his debut season, he hugely disappointed his fans. In the 11 matches that he played, he contributed 190 runs only with a not-so-impressive SR of 123.38. Among these 190 runs, 100 runs came in one innings only against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. With his playing approach, it seemed there was a lot to work on his batting approach. He's supremely strong against pace, but he struggles against spin bowling. He hardly moves his feet and gets stuck in his crease. Bowlers in the IPL have found this weakness to get the better of them every time.
