2022 Suzuki Hayabusa

Now in its third generation, the Suzuki Hayabusa was thoroughly updated for 2022. We logged 1,700 miles on public roads and did a dyno test for this road test review. (Photos by Kevin Wing) Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction. These days we’ve got three billionaires – Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson, and Elon Musk – trying to one-up each other in the space race. Ever the showman, Branson beat Bezos by a week in their personal quests to become space cowboys. If you want to book a galactic flight, a ticket could set you back a cool $250,000. What a waste. You can reach hyperspace right here on Earth for less than a tenth as much. Just head down to your 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa in Metallic Matte Sword Silver / Candy Daring Red Our test bike is a gorgeous Metallic Matte Sword Silver with Candy Daring Red accents. The ’Busa also looks sharp in Glass Sparkle Black and Candy Burnt Gold, but you can’t go wrong with Pearl Brilliant White and Metallic Matte Stellar Blue either. Ah, the tyranny of choice! Advertisement TAKING FLIGHT Yes, the Hayabusa, along with all other street-legal production motorcycles, has its top speed electronically limited to 186 mph (300 kph). But with some ingenuity – and money – you can go faster. Much faster. Just ask Becci Ellis. Her husband Mike built a turbocharged Hayabusa, and she rode it to a world-record speed of 264.10 mph in 2014. For hypersport-touring on the Hayabusa, we added a Greg’s Gear Helmet: Gloves: Jacket/Pants: Boots: Tailbag: Or ...

The 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa Is Luxurious Excess on Two Wheels

Japanese bullet trains are called Shinkansen. Their bulbous curves cut through the air at 200 mph, providing passengers with a glassy-smooth ride while casually and reliably dispatching great distances without apparent effort. Think of the 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa as a Shinkansen for one. If that seems excessive, and if you’ve ignored both motorcycle and pop culture for 20-odd years, perhaps the Hayabusa has slipped under your radar. A quick primer: Upon its launch in 1999, the Hayabusa was jaw-dropping, a swoopy Q-ship capable of walking away from anything on two wheels in an outright speed contest. Its top speed was clocked at more than 190 mph—so dazzlingly fast that the Hayabusa’s existence prompted an industry-wide handshake agreement limiting the top speed of production machines to 300km/h, or 186 mph. And this exceptional motorcycle wasn’t merely street legal; it was utterly reliable. It was even reasonably comfortable. Related Story • The Hayabusa Effect Is Real These days the Hayabusa is properly regarded as an icon, albeit a dusty one. A major refresh for model year 2008 and an update in 2013 were subtle enough to keep the spirit of the bike—and the livelihoods of the legions of enthusiastic tuners who had built a thriving ‘Busa aftermarket community—fully intact. However, the long gaps between updates left the Hayabusa sitting on the sidelines as technology and power creep pushed motorcycles into entirely new frontiers. 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa still strives to be the fastest thing on two wheels

The new bike looks a lot like the 'Busas of old. A little bulgy and bulky, certainly not pretty, but that shape is there for a reason -- low drag. The 2022 Hayabusa is still capable of doing an electronically limited 186 miles per hour, but it does it now while meeting super-strict Euro5 emissions and sound regulations and while being easier to ride. Power and torque are both down slightly, even though the 1.3-liter inline-four engine got a fairly significant overhaul. Torque is up, and the inclusion of Suzuki's Intelligent Ride System (SIRS) means that safety is up too. SIRS includes lean-sensitive antilock brakes, wheelie control, traction control and ride modes. A quickshifter is included as standard, as is a semi-electronic suspension by KYB. The new Hayabusa should hit dealers sometime towards the end of 2021 with a starting price of $18,599.

Contents • • • • • • The Hayabusa is back as a part of the For 2022, the newly updated Hayabusa draws power from a giant 1,340 cc inline-four engine. In terms of power, the new ‘Busa produces 188 horsepower and 110 lb-ft of torque—figures that are noticeably lower than those found on the previous generations. This is down to Euro5 emissions regulations, however, don’t be disheartened. While the Hayabusa has a reduction of top-end power, it has gained some boosts in the low and mid-range, which is no bad thing at all. There’s more to the new Hayabusa than the engine though. For 2022, Suzuki has stated that the ‘Busa boasts 550 new or redesigned parts. There are too many to list, so we’ll focus on the highlights: ride-by-wire, a Bosch 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit, and a whole host of IMU controlled electronics. These include traction control, rider modes, engine power modes, launch control, cruise control, wheelie control, cornering ABS, a speed limiter, and more! With so many new updates and redesigns, there’s no shortage of new components and upgrades to fawn over.
