Heart disease

Overview Heart disease describes a range of conditions that affect the heart. Heart diseases include: • Blood vessel disease, such as coronary artery disease • Irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) • Heart problems you're born with (congenital heart defects) • Disease of the heart muscle • Heart valve disease Symptoms Heart disease symptoms depend on the type of heart disease. Symptoms of heart disease in the blood vessels Coronary artery disease is a common heart condition that affects the major blood vessels that supply the heart muscle. Cholesterol deposits (plaques) in the heart arteries are usually the cause of coronary artery disease. The buildup of these plaques is called atherosclerosis (ath-ur-o-skluh-ROE-sis). Atherosclerosis reduces blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body. It can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke. Coronary artery disease symptoms may be different for men and women. For instance, men are more likely to have chest pain. Women are more likely to have other symptoms along with chest discomfort, such as shortness of breath, nausea and extreme fatigue. Symptoms of coronary artery disease can include: • Chest pain, chest tightness, chest pressure and chest discomfort (angina) • Shortness of breath • Pain in the neck, jaw, throat, upper belly area or back • Pain, numbness, weakness or coldness in the legs or arms if the blood vessels in those body areas are narrowed You might not be diagnosed with coronary artery disease unt...

The Anatomy of the Heart, Its Structures, and Functions

The heart is the organ that helps supply blood and oxygen to all parts of the body. It is divided by a partition (or septum) into two halves. The halves are, in turn, divided into four chambers. The heart is situated within the chest cavity and surrounded by a fluid-filled sac called the pericardium. This amazing muscle produces electrical impulses that cause the heart to contract, pumping blood throughout the body. The heart and the circulatory system together form the cardiovascular system. Heart Anatomy The heart is made up of four chambers: • Atria: Upper two chambers of the heart. • Ventricles: Lower two chambers of the heart. Heart Wall The • Epicardium: The outer layer of the wall of the heart. • Myocardium: The muscular middle layer of the wall of the heart. • Endocardium: The inner layer of the heart. Cardiac Conduction Cardiac conduction is the rate at which the heart conducts electrical impulses. Heart nodes and nerve fibers play an important role in causing the heart to contract. • Atrioventricular Bundle: A bundle of fibers that carry cardiac impulses. • Atrioventricular Node: A section of nodal tissue that delays and relays cardiac impulses. • Purkinje Fibers: Fiber branches that extend from the atrioventricular bundle. • Sinoatrial Node: A section of nodal tissue that sets the rate of contraction for the heart. Cardiac Cycle The • Diastole phase: The heart ventricles are relaxed and the heart fills with blood. • Systole phase: The ventricles contract and pum...

Heart: Anatomy and Function

Your heart is the main organ of your cardiovascular system, a network of blood vessels that pumps blood throughout your body. It also works with other body systems to control your heart rate and blood pressure. Your family history, personal health history and lifestyle all affect how well your heart works. Overview What is the heart? The heart is a fist-sized organ that pumps blood throughout your body. It's the primary organ of your circulatory system. Your heart contains four main sections (chambers) made of muscle and powered by electrical impulses. Your brain and What does a heart diagram look like? The inside and outside of your heart contain components that direct blood flow: Inside of the Heart Outside of the Heart Function What is the heart’s function? Your heart’s main function is to move blood throughout your body. Your heart also: • Controls the rhythm and speed of your • Maintains your How does your heart work with other organs ? Your heart works with other body systems to control your heart rate and other body functions. The primary systems are: • Nervous system: Your • Endocrine system: Your Anatomy Where is your heart located? Your heart is located in the front of your chest. It sits slightly behind and to the left of your sternum (breastbone). Your ribcage protects your heart. What side is your heart on? Your heart is slightly on the left side of your body. It sits between your right and left How big is your heart? Everyone’s heart is a slightly different s...

Anatomy and Circulation of the Heart

How Does the Heart Work? As the Blood is essential. In addition to carrying fresh oxygen from the There are three main types of blood vessels: • Arteries . They begin with the • Capillaries. These are small, thin blood vessels that connect the arteries and the veins. Their thin walls allow oxygen, nutrients, carbon dioxide, and other waste products to pass to and from our organ's cells. • Veins. These are blood vessels that take blood back to the heart; this blood lacks oxygen (oxygen-poor) and is rich in waste products that are to be excreted or removed from the body. Veins become larger and larger as they get closer to the heart. The superior vena cava is the large vein that brings blood from the head and arms to the heart, and the inferior vena cava brings blood from the Blood flows continuously through your body's blood vessels. Your heart is the pump that makes it all possible. Where Is Your Heart? The heart is under the rib cage, to the left of your breastbone (sternum) and between your Looking at the outside of the heart, you can see that the heart is made of muscle. The strong muscular walls contract (squeeze), pumping blood to the arteries. The major blood vessels connected to your heart are the aorta, the superior vena cava, the inferior vena cava, the pulmonary artery (which takes oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs where it is oxygenated), the pulmonary veins (which bring oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the heart), and the coronary arteries (which...

Sign or Symptom People with Heart Failure Might Experience... Why It Happens Shortness of breath (also called dyspnea) ... breathlessness during activity (most commonly) or while at rest. Sometimes it comes on suddenly at night, making it very hard to breathe unless you get up and move around. You may need several pillows to raise your upper body so you can breathe more easily. Blood "backs up" in the pulmonary veins (the vessels that return blood from the lungs to the heart) because the heart can't keep up with the supply. This causes fluid to leak into the lungs. Persistent coughing or wheezing ... coughing that produces white or pink blood-tinged mucus. Fluid builds up in the lungs (see above). Buildup of excess fluid in body tissues (edema) ...swelling in the feet, ankles, legs, fingers, abdomen and in other tissues and organs. As a result, weight gain is common. If you have heart failure, your heart doesn’t pump with enough force. This means that not enough blood is pumped out of the heart with e...
