When the silver screen went dark: Bollywood counts its losses in year of COVID

The coronavirus pandemic scripted a tale of unprecedented challenges for the flourishing industry that came to a screeching halt in 2020. While there are no exact figures, some insiders estimated the losses could be upwards of Rs 1,500 crore to "thousands of crores" and said single screen theatres would have lost anything between Rs 25 to Rs 75 lakh a month. According to trade analyst Amul Mohan, for instance, about 200 Hindi films are made in a year and Bollywood's yearly box office earnings stand at a little over Rs 3,000 crore. "It has been a different and difficult year. Things have not gone as per plan," Mohan told PTI. It is a dual edged crisis, of creating content and also exhibiting it with many producers either postponing or moving to OTT platforms. Though theatres in several parts of the country have opened after nine months - they closed in March when India went into lockdown to ward off COVID-19 -- people are still fearful of watching a movie in an enclosed space. To compound the problem, there are no new films to lure them in. It spells catastrophe for an industry that supports lakhs of people. About five lakh people, including actors, directors and producers, are registered with the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE). ALSO READ| Of these, 2.5 lakh are 'workers', including junior artistes, makeup, set designers, carpenters and background dancers, said FWICE president BN Tiwari, According to trade observer Himesh Mankad, the losses could carry o...

Mirroring The Industry: 8 things to learn from the box office successes and failures of 2022

Change in audience consumption pattern One of the first learnings from 2022 is to accept the fact that the content consumption pattern of the audience has changed in the post pandemic world. What worked in the pre-pandemic times is not in the post pandemic world. The genre of mid-sized social drama/comedy has completely exhausted its theatrical value and the base has shifted to OTT. Of course, this is a phase and the habit of consuming this content on the big screen will be back again, but for now, the mid-sized social films, which in pre-pandemic world was called content cinema, has eroded for box office. The tides could change this year, if 3 to 4 films falling in the social drama space manage to leave a mark at the ticket window. But as of now, we can conclude that post the pandemic, the audience wants to see either entertaining or larger than life and relatable content, but not be preached by actors through their feature films. Preaching in the garb of entertainment and preaching with entertainment as a mere sub-track are two different ways of narrating a story, wherein the former might work, but the latter is a recipe of failure in today's world. Two cents on remakes The second learning should be about remakes. While it’s all ethical and fine to remake films, but our industry needs to understand that the idea should always be to remake lesser-known films and more importantly, films which are not available in Hindi. The satellite and digital medium have played a big ro...

What’s ailing Bollywood?

Express News Service Bollywood is being associated with a new word these days, ‘boycott’. A new entrant into trending hashtags concerns concerted campaigns against upcoming releases. We saw one target Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, and there are already tweets attempting to hurt Shah Rukh Khan’s next, Pathaan. Even an actor like Hrithik Roshan, rarely part of controversies, seems to have become the target of the boycott brigade after praising Aamir’s film, and the result, a trending hashtag that goes #BoycottVikramVedha. Memes have also been created against Arjun Kapoor for saying that the film fraternity “made a mistake” by keeping silent about the trolls. So, what’s going on with the film business? The truth is, that numbers rarely lie. Aamir gave Hindi cinema’s biggest commercial hit in 2016, with Dangal, whose domestic box-office collection stands at about Rs 387 crore. Six years later comes Laal Singh Chaddha which made just Rs 54 crore in 10 days after its release, though made at a budget of `180 crore. Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan hoped to attract audiences with a release during a long weekend, but the film, made at Rs70 crore, seems to be struggling to hit Rs 50 crore. Writer Kanika Dhillon, who penned the Aanand L Rai film, alongside husband Himanshu Sharma, recently deleted as many as 17 older tweets. This comes after calls to boycott Raksha Bandhan started gaining momentum. Among the deleted tweets are those that had Kanika speak up against the Modi governmen...
