The 30 best horror movies of all time

The best horror movies of all time have no consideration for your wellbeing. In fact, the best scary movies actively aim to leave you unsettled, afraid, and jumping at shadows. But the wonderful thing about the horror genre is just how diverse these frights can be. We're all afraid of very different things, and while some movies are adept at adding to our fears, the variety of scary subgenres means that there really is something for everyone. Whether you're afraid of things that go bump in the night, slasher villains that just wont stay dead, or just a good old fashioned pea soup drenched possession movie, the best horror films have you covered (in green goo). But as you might expect, choosing just 30 from the decades of silver-screen terror for this list was a tall order. But we think we've come up with a respectably horrific list. Some classics have had to hit the gory cutting room floor - honestly, it's like a Saw sequel down there - but the movies lurking here are a perfect balance of old and new. We haven't turned our back on the films that started it all but left plenty of room for modern horror masterpieces that continue to address the demons of society. All you need to do is bring the snacks. Just don't think about that pea soup. It's time for the best horror movies of all time. The Best '70s Horror Movies (And How To Watch Them)

Whenever discussing the best horror movies of all time, a ton of titles from the 1980s immediately enter the conversation, and it’s the same for the ‘90s, 2000s, and pretty much every other decade since the start of motion pictures. But, the 1970s, with its diverse collection of titles, pushed the genre to new heights, which would allow iconic horror franchises like Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and countless others to flourish into all-time greats. (Image credit: Universal) Jaws (1975) “You’re gonna need a bigger boat” is one of those classic movie lines no one will ever forget, and it happens to be one of the crucial moments of Steven Spielberg’s 1975 thrilling monster movie, Jaws. Following a series of killings by a massive shark in a New England beach community, the town’s sheriff, an ichthyologist, and a hardened ship captain set off into the deep to find and kill the creature. (Image credit: Bryanston Distributing Company) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) Tobe Hooper’s landmark 1974 horror film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, has gone on to inspire countless movies (and nearly as many sequels and remakes) with its terrifying tone, unsettling characters, and a beloved horror icon, Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen). Who would have thought a small-budget movie about a group of travelers having an unfortunate encounter with a family of sadistic cannibals would remain so popular nearly 50 years later.
