Ibuprofen is a medicine used to treat pain, swelling, tenderness, and fever caused by many medical issues, including the following: • Headache • Toothache • Back pain • Menstrual pain • Arthritis • Injuries • Muscle aches • The common cold • Other ailments or conditions This medicine is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. Ibuprofen is available in both a prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) form. It’s used in adults and children who are at least 6 months old. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved this medicine in 1974. Ibuprofen can increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, even if you don't have any risk factors. Do not use this medicine just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG). Ibuprofen may also cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal. These conditions can occur without warning while you are using ibuprofen, especially in older adults. You should not use ibuprofen if you are allergic to it, or if you have ever had an asthma attack or severe allergic reaction after taking aspirin or an NSAID. Ask a doctor or pharmacist if this medicine is safe to use if you have ever had: • heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or if you smoke; • a heart attack, stroke, or blood clot; • stomach ulcers or bleeding; • liver or kidney disease; • asthma; or • if you take aspirin to preve...
