A meeting between district administration, ichalkaranji municipal corporation officials and Ganesh mandal members was held on Friday to resolve the issue.

Kolhapur: The Ichalkaranji Municipal Corporation (IMC) — after drawing flak for using drones to spray pesticides to remove water hyacinth in the Panchaganga river — has reverted to the previous method of using an excavating machine for the exercise. According to an official from the IMC, a special bucket attachment will be used by the excavating machines for removing the hyacinth at a faster rate. “The civic body has once again started removing water hyacinth from the river using workers, boats and an excavating machine. We are also receiving voluntary mass participation from the citizens for this exercise. The pace of the work will be increased in the next two days as large area of the river is still covered with the hyacinth. The Nadighat area has been cleared so that the plants removed from the water can be kept there on a temporary basis,” the official said. Aniket Patil, a resident of Nadighat area, voluntarily joined the water hyacinth removal work. “Earlier the municipal corporation had used drones to spray pesticides following which there was a lot of uproar. The move was strongly opposed by the environmentalists. Kolhapur: The district administration has found a solution to the demand for idol immersion in the Panchaganga river in Ichalkaranji. A meeting between district administration, Ichalkaranji municipal corporation officials and Ganesh mandal members was held on Friday to resolve the issue. The Ichalkaranji civic body officials said they will create big artificial tanks on both sides of the Panchaganga river between Nadives Naka to Yashoda bridge, in which, bigger idols could be immersed, easily. District collector Rahul Rekhawar, the superintendent of Kolhapur police Shailesh Balkawade, Ichalkaranji administrator Sudhakar Deshmukh, MLA Prakash Awade, upper police superintendent Jayshri Gaikwad and upper Tehsildar Sharad Patil were present at the meeting. MLA Prakash Awade said, “The Ichalkaranji civic body has assured that big artificial tanks having extra width and depth would be set up between Nadives Naka to Yashoda bridge for idol immersion. The municipal corporation should carry out these alternative works at a fast pace. However, if these tanks become full, people will immerse idols in the Panchaganga river. The traditional procession route will also be the same from Shivtirth Naka to Nadives Naka.”

As per a statement issued by the chief minister’s office, the state government has invited suggestions and objections from citizens about the move. At present, there is only one municipal corporation in Kolhapur district, which is developing rapidly, with the growth in population and urban pockets. Ichalkaranji city in the district is a municipal council and is known for its textile manufacturing industry.
