10 dead, 25 injured in Australian wine country bus crash: police

The 58-year-old driver was arrested and being held at a Cessnock police station and will be charged, Police Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman said. She would not detail the allegations, including whether speed was a factor, but told reporters “There is sufficient information for us to establish that there will be charges.” The crash happened just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday in foggy conditions at a roundabout on Wine Country Drive in the town of Greta in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales state north of Sydney. The guests had earlier attended a wedding at the Wandin Estate Winery and were heading for their accommodation in the town of Singleton, Chapman said. One guest told Seven News it had been a nice day and a fairytale wedding. A motorist who drove past the crash scene, identified by Australian Broadcasting Corp. only as Alison, said the fog was so heavy she could not make out the colours of the flashing lights of police cars, ambulances and fire trucks. “The fog was terrible,” she told the ABC. “It was super foggy. You could barely see in front of you.” Of the 25 people injured, 21 remained in hospitals late Monday morning and one was in critical condition, the state government said. The conditions of the others were described as stable. Another 18 passengers were uninjured. To the loved ones of those we've lost in such horrific circumstances: Australia wraps its arms around you and all of our hopes and prayers are with you on this tragic day. Prime Minister A...

Increase fleet for success of ‘Shakti’ in Karnataka, says bus commuters

The government decision to procure 1,894 buses for all bus corporations -- KSRTC, BMTC, KKRTC and NWKRTC -- isn’t enough as the ridership is expected to multiply several fold because of the scheme, they felt. “Bengaluru, which has a population of 1.3 crore, will alone require 14,000-16,000 buses against the existing fleet of approximately 6,000 buses currently,” said Shaheen Shasa of Bengaluru Bus Prayanikara Vedike, a bus commuters’ rights forum. “We do not have a whole Karnataka understanding of travel issues and needs. From a Bengaluru point of view again, it will be difficult to say how much additional capacity will be needed to meet the immediate surge in ridership” Shasa said and added, “But, we know that for overall mobility needs and gaps in Bengaluru currently, we need much more buses than what the government has planned to procure.” Buses saw an increase in women ridership on Monday | Shashidhar Byrappa She said bus procurement cannot be done in one go and will have to be done in stages. Shasa suggested that BMTC put the currently unused 1,000 buses into service and procure 1,000 buses more at the earliest. These additional fleet should be used to increase the frequency and add new routes where needed. These can provide a much-needed increase in coverage and frequency. Malathi, a BMTC bus commuter, said every day, they find it difficult to travel, especially during peak hours. “Buses are so crowded that many are discouraged from using public transport. If there a...

• • • • Karnataka’s Congress govt flags off first of 5 promises: free bus ride for women Karnataka’s Congress govt flags off first of 5 promises: free bus ride for women The scheme does not apply to air-conditioned and luxury buses and is limited to travel within the state. It also reserves 50 per cent of seats for men in three transport corporations, except BMTC. The Congress government in Karnataka rolled out the first of its five poll guarantees Sunday by launching the ‘Shakti’ scheme, which offers free bus rides within the state for women and transgender people in buses of the state-run transport corporations . At the Kempegowda Bus Terminal in Bengaluru, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar handed out ‘zero-value’ tickets to five women passengers — Sumitra, Radha, Prema, Kalavathi and Pavithra — and flagged off a bus travelling to the temple town of Dharmasthala. The first beneficiaries of the new scheme were handed replicas of the smart cards that would be issued in the next three months to women passengers. The total outgo for the Shakti scheme is expected to exceed Rs 4,000 crore annually and the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will have to add 4,028 buses to its fleet for the successful implementation of the scheme, according to a report submitted to the government by the transport department.
