IV is used for the determination of the quality of diesel fuel derived from vegetable oils [ 9]. Several alternative calculation procedures to determine IV of oils directly from their FAME composition have been proposed [ 10, 11], including the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS) method Cd 1d-92 [ 10]. In a 2013 study published in Lancet, researchers evaluated the effect of insufficient iodine in pregnancy on cognitive outcomes in children. Researchers measured urinary iodine concentration in 1,040 pregnant participants during the first trimester. Later, they also measured the children's intelligence quotient (IQ) at age 8. First, researchers assessed the iodine concentration of 266 pregnant people attending antenatal clinics at the Royal Hobart Hospital in Australia from 1999 to 2000. Then, researchers compared their children's standardized test scores in literacy and math when they were ages 8–9, 10–11, 12–13, and 14–15 years. The study found that even mild iodine deficiency in pregnancy had long-term cognitive effects. For example, children whose parents had iodine deficiency during pregnancy had reduced scores in reading, spelling, and grammar, independent of other factors known to impact learning. These effects did not resolve with sufficient iodine intake during childhood. In addition to cancer treatments, iodine may also help prevent thyroid cancer after nuclear emergencies. Nuclear accidents can release radioactive iodine into the environment, increasing the risk of thyroid cancer in those exposed. Thus, some research has evaluated whether iodine supplementation could reduce cancer risk in high-risk populations following some historic nuclear disasters. In this study, three portable spectroscopy devices were employed to determine IV in mixed edible oil system, a new Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System (MEMS) Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (MEMS-FTIR), a MicroNIR TM1700 and an i-Raman Plus-785S. Quantitative model was built by Partial least squares (PLS) regression model and four variable selection methods were applied before PLS model, which are Monte Carlo uninformative variables elimination (MCUVE), competitive reweighted sampling (CARS), bootstrapping soft shrinkage approach (BOSS) and variable combination population analysis (VCPA). The coefficient of determination (R 2), and the root mean square error prediction (RMSEP) were used as indicators for the predictability of the PLS models. In MicroNIR TM1700 dataset, MCUVE gave the lowest RMSEP (2.3440), in MEMS-FTIR dataset, CARS showed the best performance with RMSEP (2.2185), in i-Raman Plus-785S dataset, BOSS gave the lowest RMSEP (2.5058). Sponsored by Bruker Optics Feb 6 2012 Iodine value (IV) is a measure of the total number of unsaturated double bonds present in fats and oils. It is normally expressed in terms of “number of grams of iodine that will react with the double bonds in 100 grams of fats or oils”. It must be noted that a high IV value in oil consists of a greater number of double bonds than a low IV oil. Fats with high iodine value are normally soft or liquid and are less stable to oxidation. The AOCS recommended method D1959-97 (Wij’s procedure) is broadly used for determination of IV. The method involves adding halogen in the presence of potassium iodide and the titrating the released iodine with sodium thiosulfate using a standard starch solution as the indicator. The time taken for this analysis is at least 30 minutes and has to be performed on samples taken out of the process line. On the other hand, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is quick with an analysis time of the order of less than 1 minute and does not need the use of any solvents or reagents. Fiber optic probes are very useful and help perform real time, on-line measurement of IV resulting in huge time and cost savings.
