JALANDHAR: In a major setback, the Congress lost Jalandhar parliamentary seat in the byelection which was necessitated due to death of party MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary. AAP candidate Sushil Kumar Rinku, a former Congress MLA who was inducted in the party on April 5, won by a margin of over 58,000 votes. AAP leadership was desperate for victory in Jalandhar after it lost the Sangrur byelection in around three months after sweeping the assembly election last year. Before this bypoll, Jalandhar has traditionally remained with Congress and in the last over five decades it lost the seat only four times – in 1977, 1989, 1996 and 1998, when the entire opposition was united and there was strong wave against Congress. What adds to the shock even more for Congress is that in the 2022 assembly election, the party had won five out of nine assembly segments despite strong wave for AAP swept across the state. In the assembly election, then CM Charanjit Singh Channi’s caste factor was believed to have worked for Congress in Jalandhar, which has high population of Ad-dharmi/Ravidasia/Ramdasia community and from which Channi comes.
