NEW DELHI: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students Union members began a sit-in protest outside the office of the dean of students on Wednesday demanding allotment of hostels to students of the 2021 batch. JNUSU members also demanded the resumption of offline classes for first-year students. The JNUSU has vowed to continue the protest until a notification regarding physical verification and hostel allotment is released. "Many students are facing problems due to the non-allotment of the hostels to first-year students. Despite several assurances, the Dean of Students (DoS) office has not issued any notification in this regard," said Anagha Pradeep, councillor of JNUSU. On Tuesday, the JNUSU wrote to JNU vice-chancellor Santishree Dhulpudi Pandit, requesting the commencement of physical verification of documents and hostel allotment for the batch. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) has urged the university administration to ensure priority hostel allotment to first-year students in the SC and ST categories. In a letter to Dean of Students Sudheer Pratap Singh, the JNUSU said the hostel allotment list for male students was yet to be published despite undergraduate and postgraduate classes starting already, causing them "extreme difficulties". In its letter to Mr Singh, the JNUSU said, "The classes for UG and PG batch of 2022 started on 21 and 28 November 2022, respectively. But, so far, your office has not come up with any hostel allotment list for the male students, as a result of which students are facing extreme difficulties. As per the schedule shared by the university, students can expect the merit list announcement by tomorrow i.e., October 17, 2022. The protest was organised by a student group named Democratic Students Federation (DSF). They also demanded that hostel elections that have not been conducted for the last two years, be held soon. Students were holding placards reading, ‘DoS Jawaab Do (DoS, answer),’‘Ensure Hostels for All’, ‘Stop meddling with reservation policies in Hostel Allotment’, “We organised the protest outside the DoS office to demand immediate hostel allotment. Physical classes are starting from August 3 but many students have not been allotted hostels till now. It is a complete chaos. Moreover, reservation policies have not been followed properly in the hostel allotment so far,” DSF President Swati Singh said. The hostels are in a very bad state with the frequent incidents of wall or ceiling collapse taking place here, she said. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) submitted a memorandum to the Dean of Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), demanding immediate implementation of reservation policies for hostel allotment to the new undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) batches. The students claim that the reservation guidelines for the allotment have been flouted once again. Previously, in July this year, the students had alleged such discrepancies in the allotment process. “The same issue keeps repeating itself and we have to write to the administration to address it or stage demonstrations,” says Sagnik Sarkar, a second-year student of the institution. The students informed us that they will be staging a protest against this issue on November 24. What happened? The UG classes of the 2022 batch began yesterday, November 21 and the PG classes are due to begin on November 28; however, the students claim that the JNU administration is yet to provide the students with hostel facilities or an allotment list.
