Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, Omkareshwar

We visited this temple along with Onkareshwar Temple in a car from Indore. It is situated at a distance of 75 km from Indore. The road is good but heavily trafficked. It took us 2 hours to reach the temple. After parking our car in a parking close to the temple we visited this temple. It was around 1130 am since we first went to Onkareshwar Temple so the temple was closed for Aarti. We participated in the Aarti rather waited for it outside. It was a soothing and relaxing experience hearing the sounds of nagaada and bells with chants of ‘ Har Har Mahadev’. The temple reopened at 1200 pm and we were able to do darshnas in 10 mins. Overall a soothing experience Located on the southern bank of the Narmada river, the ancient Mamleshwar Temple, also known as Amleshwar or Amareshwar Temple is a set of temples with fascinating work of art and together with the more crowded Omkareshwar Jyotirling Temple [ located opposite on the Shivpuri mountain island ] constitutes one of the twelve revered Jyotirlings in Hinduism. It takes around four hours by car from Ujjain to reach Mamleshwar and Omkareshwar and going by the folklore, the Mamleshwar Shiva lingam is said to have been built by the Pandavas during their time of exile. A true enchanting experience !! Reach Indore, which is major town having airport/train facilities. Stay at hotel at indie. Take a cab and reach Om KALESWARA otherside of the river and this side mamaleswar. It takes around two hours onway. While returning on the way...

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Mahakal lingam at this temple is believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested), obtaining currents of Shakti (power) from within itself. Mahakaleshwar is also one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas in India. Another factor that makes Mahakaleshwar one of the most revered Jyotirlingas in India is the fact that the Mahakaleshwar idol is Dakshina Mukhi ,facing south, unlike all the other Jyotirlingas. Considered no less than a Hindu pilgrimage, the Bhasma-Aarti of Mahakaleshwar Temple is hugely popular amongst the devotees. The Mahakaleshwar Temple complex is a spacious courtyard with sculptural finery and sophistication that is influenced by Maratha, Bhumija and Chalukya styles of structural design and is complete with impressive lingam sculptures of Mahakaleshwar. It also has the inscriptions of Omkaresvara and Nagachandresvara and images of Ganesha, Kartikeya and Parvati. The temple, which is spread over five levels,...

The Jyotirlingas, Madhya Pradesh

The Jyotirlingas are believed to the divine form of Lord Shiva. There are 12 such Jyotirlingas in India and the popular belief is that if one visits all the 12 Jyotirlingas, he or she would be relieved from karmic bondage and be free from the cycle of birth and death. As it is, Lord Shiva is worshipped by millions of devotees and it is not surprising that the Jyotirlingas too attract millions of devotees every year. Jyotirlinga vs Shivalinga As opposed to Shivalingas which are created by man, Jyotirlingas are said to be not man made but ‘Swayambhu’, born of itself. Each of the 12 Jyortirlingas has interesting legend as to its formation. I had an opportunity recently to visit the two Jyortirlingas in Madhya Pradesh, located at Omkareshwar and Ujjain. The closest airport is at Indore. • Jyotirlinga temple, Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh • Mahakal Jyotirlinga temple, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh How to get to Omkareshwar Omkareshwar is located about 80kms south from Indore and the best way (possibly the only way) to get there is by road – I hired a private car but one can take the bus as well, government or private. The journey time over the Indore-Khandwa road and then onto Mortakka – Omkareshwar road is about 2.5 hours with one break. This should come down in future once the widening and cementing of the road from Indore to the national highway no. 52 bypass is completed. But thereafter, the entire stretch is a 2 laned road which slows down traffic. While the road condition was ok, ...
