‘Secret papers on Rafale deal stolen,’ AG K.K. Venugopal tells SC

Attorney-General K.K. Venugopal told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that “secret” documents published by The Hindu on the purchase of 36 Rafale jets were “stolen” from the Ministry of Defence, probably by former employees. Mr. Venugopal referred to the lead article in The Hindu on March 6, saying ‘sensitive’ information like the price of the weapons is now in the public domain. Attorney General K K Venugopal has agreed for extension of one more year as a top law officer of the country. Venugopal, 89, was offered an extension by the government and he has consented to it for the period of one year only on the ground of his age, they said. Sources said Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited his residence recently to convince him to stay on the post for another three-year term. The tenure of the AG is coming to an end on June 30. Venugopal, a leading lawyer of the country, was appointed as Attorney General and had succeeded Mukul Rohatgi on June 30, 2017. Known as a doyen of Indian Bar, Venugopal has appeared for the Centre in Aadhaar and Rafale cases, among others, in the Supreme Court. He is defending the Union government in other important cases including those related to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution.

The central government is likely to reappoint Senior Advocate K K Venugopal as Attorney General for India for a period of one more year with effect from July 1. The Attorney General for India, a constitutional post, is the top legal officer of the country. Venugopal took over as the 15th Attorney General for India on July 1, 2017, succeeding senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi who was A-G from 2014-2017. When his three-year tenure came to an end in 2020, 91-year old Venugopal had requested that he be relieved of his post citing his advancing age. However, the central government requested him to continue holding the top office for another term and Venugopal agreed but restricted extending his term by a year.

Venugopal is a prominent constitutional lawyer and a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India, who serves as Attorney General of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since June 2017. He was appointed in the position at the age of 86 and he replaced Mukul Rohatgi. Government of India honoured him with the second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan in 2015 for his outstanding contributions to the field of Public Affairs and Law Making. Earlier he received Padma Bhushan from Government of India. His name has been linked with many high profile cases of Kerala, and he always remained in spotlight. Kottayan Katankot Venugopal, commonly known as K. K. Venugopal hails from Kanhangad, Kasaragode, Kerala. The place belonged to Malabar region under British rule, when he was born in 1931.
