The Congress party has emerged the single-largest party in the Karnataka Assembly polls and is set to form the government in the southern citadel, after registering a thumping victory. The DK Shivakumar-led Karnataka Congress has crossed the halfway-mark of 113 and is currently at 136. The BJP, currently hovering at around 64, has conceded defeat to the grand old party. The regional party of the state, JD(S) is at around 20. The victory is a big morale booster for the Congress, which, barring the success in Himachal Pradesh in December, had not won a single state election since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The scale of the victory will help the Congress gain momentum and get battle-ready to take on the saffron party head-on in the General Lections, next year. Karnataka result shows India’s natural position is in the centre

Ruchir Sharma, the banker and writer, said that India tends to disappoint both pessimists and optimists, meaning that its progress in the long term was not marked by the striking acceleration that defined the economic success of China and South Korea and Japan before it. It would remain as poor as its sisters in South Asia. However, India also disappoints those who conclude that it is a lost cause and doomed to failure. It can go all the way up to imminent default, but it pulls itself back. The reality, Sharma says, is more banal. India staggers along but corrects itself before it reaches an extreme, whether that is success or failure, and comes around to the middle. The narrative of New India It appears that this thesis has carried over from the economy to India’s politics. The BJP is seen by its supporters as the unstoppable force that will transform the nation, and transform it radically (“New India”). The agent of that change is a leader, the Prime Minister, who is seen in messianic terms. He will bring something special because he is the sole possessor of it. We are now in year 10 of this dispensation and it is not that we are lacking in evidence or data on the side of the economy, or national security, or employment or any of the major objective things that would qualify as being radical change. But that does not seem to matter to the believers because bhakti does not require a demonstration from the object that is deified. The magic is produced in the believer and n...

Karnataka results: What lessons the loss holds for BJP

• Also read in: • Karnataka results: What lessons the loss holds for BJP Karnataka has a long history of caste empowerment. The ideological stream of Lohiaite socialism was adapted and merged into the legacy of Devaraj Urs, which influenced the Congress to position itself as a proponent of social justice politics in the state. Karnataka has voted decisively for the Congress, after a decade. In 2013, it won 122 seats with a 36 per cent vote. On Saturday, it won 135 seats — its ally, the Sarvodaya Karnataka Paksha, won the one seat it contested — more than double the BJP’s tally of 66, and almost 43 per cent of the vote. The BJP performed below par across the statedespite Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the campaign. The PM had given a personal tone to the campaign, framing the election as a vote for a double-engine sarkar. He also gave it a polarising spin, particularly in the last lap, by invoking Bajrang Bali. The gambit failed. The electorate preferred the Congress’s promise of welfare and its endorsement of secularism: the Congress manifestohad borrowed the great poet Kuvempu’s famous line, “ Sarva janangada shanthiya thota (the garden where all communities live in peace)”, as its credo. Hence, it is tempting to agree with Rahul Gandhi’s remarkthat “Karnataka mein nafrat ka bazaar band hua hai aur mohabbat ki dukan khuli hai”. It is also true that the Bharat Jodo BJP’s rise in Karnataka There is a lesson or two for the This is a scenario that did not develop in oth...
