Synopsis Karnataka Election 2023 Date: The state has not given any party a successive mandate. In the last four decades, only Ramakrishna Hegde-led Janata Party managed to came back to power in 1985. Meanwhile, the Karnataka elections are expected to be a close contest between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, with the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) playing a possible kingmaker role. The state has not given any party a successive mandate. In the last four decades, only Ramakrishna Hegde-led Janata Party managed to came back to power in 1985. Meanwhile, the Karnataka elections are expected to be a close contest between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, with the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) playing a possible kingmaker role. Lingayats are a politically-dominant community and can play a major role in deciding the fate of about 100 seats of Karnataka. In the current Karnataka assembly, there are 54 Lingayat MLAs including 37 from the ruling BJP. Among the 23 chief ministers from the state since 1952, as many as 10 have been Lingayats. BJP stalwart Yediyurappa also hails from the same Lingayat community. What happened in last elections in 2018? Karnataka assembly polls in 2018 witnessed a hung assembly with BJP emerging as the single largest party. It won 104 seats while the Congress and JD (S) won 87 and 30 seats each. There are 224 Assembly seats up for grabs with the term of the current Assembly ending on May 24.
