Tinea Versicolor: Symptoms, Causes & Treatments

Overview People with tinea versicolor develop patches of discolored skin on their face, back, shoulders or abdomen. What is tinea versicolor? Tinea versicolor is a common fungal infection that causes discolored skin. People with tinea versicolor develop white, yellow, red, pink or brown spots. It’s caused by an overgrowth of a type of yeast (fungus) that’s naturally found on your skin. Hot weather, humidity and sun exposure can make tinea versicolor worse. It’s not harmful or contagious but can be mildly itchy. Tinea versicolor is most commonly found on your shoulders, back and upper chest. Healthcare providers treat the condition with topical or oral What does tinea versicolor look like? Tinea versicolor can affect all skin colors differently. The overgrowth of fungus causes small, round patches of skin to get either lighter or darker than the surrounding skin. It’s more common for your skin to get lighter. The spots can appear white, pink, red, brown, light tan or yellow. On darker skin, tinea versicolor appears white or light tan. On lighter or paler skin, tinea versicolor looks light red or pink. Some patches or spots can become scaly and dry. Over time, the patches get larger and start to connect, covering larger areas of your skin. The patches might be more noticeable after sun exposure because the rest of your skin tans (or gets darker) but the infected area won’t. This makes them stand out a little more. Who gets tinea versicolor? Tinea versicolor affects many peop...

Treating Seborrheic Dermatitis with Zinc Pyrithione – SkinDrone

A large number of dermatologists may also recommend using zinc pyrithione for seborrheic dermatitis. Zinc pyrithione is another anti-fungal agent most commonly available in commercial shampoo formulations. Zinc pyrithione shampoos can be found in most drug stores and super markets in North America. Soaps, creams, and lotions that integrate zinc pyrithione are more difficult to find, but are available for purchase without prescription. Products that integrate zinc pyrithione typically do so at a 1% concentration. Yet, products that implement a higher 2% concentration are also available. Who funds most of the research behind zinc pyrithione? A large part of the research on zinc pyrithione has been conducted or sponsored by Proctor and Gamble (the parent company behind Head and Shoulders). How Zinc Pyrithione is Believed to Relieve Seborrheic Dermatitis The main mode of action of zinc pyrithione for seborrheic is believed to be associated with it’s antifungal activity [ Lab (in vitro) testing has demonstrated its ability to effectively destroy various malassezia fungal species and inhibit their reproduction [ In addition to its antifungal activity, zinc pyrithione may improve scalp healing by normalizing the outer-layer of skin tissue and normalizing sebum production. These characteristics may in fact be of equal or perhaps even greater importance than the antifungal activity alone [ An Alternate Less Discussed Possible Method of Action Some studies also suggest that zinc pyr...

Treatment of Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting areas of the head and trunk where sebaceous glands are most prominent. Lipophilic yeasts of the Malassezia genus, as well as genetic, environmental and general health factors, contribute to this disorder. Scalp seborrhea varies from mild dandruff to dense, diffuse, adherent scale. Facial and trunk seborrhea is characterized by powdery or greasy scale in skin folds and along hair margins. Treatment options include application of selenium sulfide, pyrithione zinc or ketoconazole-containing shampoos, topical ketoconazole cream or terbinafine solution, topical sodium sulfacetamide and topical corticosteroids. The etiology of seborrheic dermatitis remains unknown, although many factors, including hormonal, have been implicated. This chronic inflammatory skin disorder is generally confined to areas of the head and trunk where sebaceous glands are most prominent. When seborrheic dermatitis occurs in the neonatal period, it usually disappears by six to 12 months of age, suggesting that it may be a response to maternal hormone stimulation. Pityrosporum ovale, a lipophilic yeast of the Malassezia genus, has been implicated in the development of this condition. P. ovale is present on all persons. Why some persons develop seborrheic dermatitis and others do not is unclear. The colonization rate of involved skin by this organism may be lower than that of uninvolved skin. Genetic and environmental factors, as well as oth...
