The Gouri Gunj bungalow of the late singer and actor Kishore Kumar was bought by Virat Kohli last year for the price of Rs 19 crore. It has now been turned into a luxury restaurant with cuisines that range from North Indian and Mediterranean. Virat Kohli’s One8 Commune is one of the most famous restaurants in Delhi and Pune and has also become the IT spot in Mumbai’s Juhu. It captures the vintage look of Kishore Kumar’s old home, all the while displaying the modern look of Kohli’s new eatery. Over the years, Juhu has seen it all — yesteryear actors fading away into obsolescence, restaurants popping up and dissolving just like the waves lapping up at the chowpatty, pav bhaji stalls standing the test of time, the maiden voyage of JRD Tata from Karachi, and the bustling communities of toddy tappers and kunbis right the 17th century. “At One8 Commune, we particularly paid attention to what was offered from our kitchens and in exploring that we realised that in India no matter how globally engaged we become, our real everyday meals are not usually centred on the heavier dishes,” Kohli tells GQ. “Consequently, at One8 Commune, we took a conscious call to instead focus on more greens & grains based approachable and relevant meals, and I have to say it, healthier too.” By Vivek Menezes Kohli adds that he made that move towards greens himself and discovered being vegetarian really isn't about missing out. “In fact, no meat in my diet opened my eyes to entirely new cuisines and palettes of flavours that were unexplored here.
