Kovalam bike accident

Thiruvananthapuram: Kovalam police on Sunday arrested a youth for the death of a four-year-old boy last month. According to police, the two-wheeler driven by the accused had hit the boy and his mother while they were crossing the road near Porode bridge at Kovalam bypass. Police said the accused was engaged in bike racing when the accident happened. The arrested has been identified by police as Mohammed Ashique (23), son of Sakeer Hussein of Badariya Manzil at Chittattumukku near Menamkulam, Kaniyapuram. Ashique has been released on station bail after being charged under sections of the IPC 304-A for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and 279 for rash driving. Kovalam natives Yuvan (4), and his mother Anju (26), were knocked down by the speeding vehicle while they were coming back home after buying toys on March 30. The seriously injured Yuvan and Anju were rushed to hospital, but Yuvan succumbed to the injuries later at the hospital. After the accident the accused did not stop the vehicle and escaped from the spot. Even though police identified the vehicle from the CCTV footage, the number of the vehicle was not clear. They then directed all workshop owners and showroom managers in the vicinity to report immediately if anyone who owns a luxury bike approaches them for repair works. An image of the vehicle was also sent to them.

Thiruvananthapuram: A 53-year-old woman died on Sunday at the Kovalam bypass here after being hit by a speeding two-wheeler allegedly indulging in illegal bike racing, police said. The 24-year-old biker, who was seriously injured in the incident, died in the evening, police said. According to an officer of Thiruvallam police station, the incident occurred around 7 am when the woman was crossing the bypass road to the other side. The bike rider was initially admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram medical college, but his family later shifted him to a private hospital, the officer said. A case under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code was registered, she said. Local residents of the area said they heard a loud crash in the morning and upon checking found the woman dead near the road divider, while the bike rider was found about 100 metres further away in a ditch on the roadside.

A young man who was undergoing treatment in a critical condition died after the Kovalam racing accident. Arvind, a resident of Potakuzhi, who was a biker, died. He was 25 years old. During the bike racing, the passerby was knocked down by the bike. The passer-by died on the spot. Sandhya, a native of Panathura, died after being hit by a bike. He was 55 years old. Due to the accident, the young man’s neck was broken and his whole body was injured. He died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. Also, the Motor Vehicle Department has informed that vehicle inspection will be strengthened in the state. Meanwhile, Transport Minister Antony Raju said that it has not been confirmed that the accident was during bike racing. The Motor Vehicle Department will investigate the incident separately. Antony Raju said that racing has not taken place in the region for the past one year.
