Laal Singh Chaddha Review: Aamir Khan's Film Is Watchable, Flaws Notwithstanding 3 stars

Reworking a 1994 Hollywood drama centred on the Vietnam War into an Indian story that pans out over several decades later wouldn't have been a cakewalk. But screenwriter Atul Kulkarni makes a fair fist of it, giving star Aamir Khan enough room for the emotional manoeuvrings that are required to flesh out a dorky but doughty man coming to terms with the complex world around him without ever losing his innocence, optimism and gumption. Deftly crafted and consistently well-acted - a de-aged Aamir Khan throws all that he has into the role and comes up with a simpleton who is wondrously loveable - the film's principal strength stems from its stress on the power of hope in a time of violence and venality. Late in Laal Singh Chaddha, donning a spanking new pair of shoes and on a whim, the unassuming protagonist goes on a run across the country. People join him as he sprints from one part of India to another. Unity in diversity isn't a particularly original idea, but its reiteration, no matter in what form, has never been more necessary. India is in the midst of a level of social and political turmoil that it has rarely encountered since it gained independence. Laal Singh Chaddha could, at one level, be seen as an attempt to lull us into a false sense of ease. That is exactly what the conservative-minded Forrest Gump had attempted to do (with a great degree of success) in the US of A in the decades following the disastrous Vietnam War and the fallout of the Watergate scandal. Indi...

Laal Singh Chaddha Movie Review: Aamir Khan advocates humanity over religion in this faithful but lengthy Forrest Gump adaptation

Story: Slow-witted but an eternal optimist, Laal Singh Chaddha (Aamir Khan) stumbles through life, thinking to himself — should you write your own destiny or float freely like a feather going wherever life takes you? Is life a question of choices, matter of chances or the symphony of both? Directed by Advait Chandan, the film is a Hindi adaptation of Robert Zemeckis’ 1994 Oscar winning film ‘Forrest Gump’, starring Tom Hanks. Review: Laal Singh Chaddha verbalises Forrest Gump’s musings on life, love, morality and destiny. If the original conveyed things best in a soft, easy, unspoken way; this film turns up the tone and energy a bit. It opts for speech over silent tears so expect a perpetually wide-eyed Aamir Khan doing a lot of Punjabi accent with PK’s body language and enthusiasm. He sets the tempo of this film a bit higher, that of a big-ticket Hindi feature film but retains the essence of the original — a Disney like fairy-tale without the luxury of magic but an ingrained belief in miracles. Laal Singh Chaddha (LSC) localises the events but continues to stay in Forrest’s world. Adapting a classic isn’t an easy territory to tread. Remaking Forrest Gump (FG) is even more complicated given its meandering, all-encompassing, nonlinear plot and profound yet simple approach to life and its purpose. You watch a simpleton wandering through life, not looking for answers but finding them along the way. He tells you his story as he embarks on a train journey from Pathankot to Chan...
